Steering started feeling light and a bit mushy

Whilst driving yesterday I think my steering started feeling a bit different: less responsive, lighter and softer and even a bit mushy. It's not a massive difference but I'm pretty sure something has changed. Had a quick search on here and couldn't find anything similar.

Checked the wheels nuts and all seems ok (changed to summer wheels myself for first time earlier in the year so a bit paranoid!). Tyre pressures are towards the low end (32psi) of where I normally have them so plan to increase those later to see if that rectifies it.

Any other things I should check/change? Or should I get this checked out?

Any suggestion greatly appreciated! FL2 2011 SD4 XS in Galway Green

Could be your steering rack on the way out.

Have you had the filter changed?

I've found this happens with mine. It's a MY13 on 19" continentals UHP tyres with less than 20k, the steering feels a bit vague/not positive occasionally and if the roads are wet/damp it's terrible. I'm changing the tyres in the new year so I'll see how it goes then. MY13 HSE LUX Aintree Green

Could be...I haven't changed the filter personally, and has only been done if it was part of a scheduled service (the last of which was about 3 or 4 months ago)?

It's a 2011, so only about 4.5 years old. I (very much a laymen tho) thought steering racks tended to go in older cars / with more mileage?

Thanks for the response; always nice to hear from a fellow Ian - albeit with an errant 'i' Very Happy FL2 2011 SD4 XS in Galway Green

Ah ok, good to know I'm not alone! Mine is on 19" with that kind of mileage on the tyres too. Plan to switch back to winters in a month or so, so if I don't resolve / get it looked at before maybe that'll help.

Was also wondering if it could be a balancing/alignment issue? Having changed the wheels myself, I didn't get them balanced. FL2 2011 SD4 XS in Galway Green

Had my F2 since march, steering always felt a bit strange, then last week the power steering pump started wineing very loudly, did a full fluid change and a new reservoir, completely transformed the feel of the steering and as quiet as a mouse, for those that didnt know the reservoir outlet contains a plastic filter screen which blocks,

Could just be the effect as the tyres wear down, you always feel the car drives much better just after brand new tyres are put on, whether thats imagination i dont know, but it always seems to be the case?

Finally got this looked at as part of service, and no problem found. Think it might just have been as suggested a slight change in feel as the tyres have worn and me getting hyper sensitive.

Full confidence restored! FL2 2011 SD4 XS in Galway Green
