yes, it's not cheap, but you don't need to do it that often. Why not use the correct stuff?

Yep... They are constructive advice because:

For a 20000+ pounds car, you are looking to save 2-3 pounds per liter of oil.
You can save, in extremis, let's say 30 pounds. How much do you pay for a tank full of diesel?
Between oil changes, how much fuel tanks did you pay?
If you do the math, then you'll realize that the savings are not significant in report with running costs....

So, again, please tell me, why you need to save so little money for an operation that is done so rare?
And all this when the quality of oils that are poured there needs to be quite OK?
Are you sure that those cheaper - as you say - alternatives are OK? And won't cost you not so cheaper workshop bills?

But hey, each to his own, who am I or us to tell you how to run and pay for your car... Sorry...

Here you go again.
Questioning why, instead of trying to advise an alternative to the oils like I'm seeking advise on.
You don't have to force your views of how better to spend our money on to members.
How about we stick to the title of the topic.
I'm fully aware of quality differences but I am not asking about quality.
Maybe someone else could advise on the alternative oils?

Hi unfortunatly i dont know of alternate brands. But have you got a price from forum sponser Dan @ Duckworths. Im guessing you can probably pick up the genuine reccomended product for less than you can get alternatives if there are any.

Ps if you feel the need to respond to my advice in the same manor you have Alex, a very knowledgeable and helpfull forum member who is trying to save you a costly error. Then may i suggest used chip fat oil as an alternative!

All advice above taken at own risk, no liability from me etc

I think we are just struggling to see why you would want to use anything else. So in answer to your original post, no, there aren't any cheaper alternatives that would be recommended. Good luck with the work. Thumbs Up

Here on my country/town, we have a street which is full of workshops and stores that sell car parts, accessories and consumables. For sure you have one on your town/region.
Go there, give them your VIN and requests and for sure, like here, they will present you with a long list of manufacturers and/or prices.
Pick the one that suits your desires and habits.

I cannot give you an alternative, because the LR specified ones are pretty much common/generic ones and you can find them at a reasonable price, outside the dealer network, like I've said in the first post.
And in the same time, not many, including me, have tried to test another type of oil, without fully changing it. I believe you know what's said about mixing different types of oils, especially when you are unable to fully drain the old one like in this case and start from clean dry...

Have fun!

Google freelander 2 fluid specs, check Euro car parts, check ebay, many alternatives out there.
I would caution you about mixing different fluids, better to completely drain and flush.

There are quite a few cheaper alternative of say the diff oil ep80w 90 but the money saving is only a few pounds. Morris oil do the same specification as well as comma oil. I change my oil at my mates garage as he buy his oil in large drums so I only pay for the oil I use and he always swears by using the correct manufacture recommended brand.
