If youre swopping tyres around you just need to make sure ones you have fitted arent directional type, if so you need to keep them on the same side so they rotate in the direction as stated by the arrow on the sidewall,

I swapped my General Grabber AT's front to back when it was obvious I was scrubbing the shoulders on the fronts.

I would change all 4 if the tread between front and rear tyres aren't too great, say 1 mm and you can afford it. Otherwise you should change tyres with the same make and model so the rolling diameters of new and old are similar. I read horrible stories of drive train failure caused by the difference in diameters of front and rear tyres.

Land Rover swapped mine front to back on a service whilst replacing the alloys, it was noticeably unstable to drive, quite sensitive.......just had 4 new ones and it is back to being the firm, stable and positive drive it was!

Each tyre on my car will never leave the position they started in.
