Replacing front centre ventilation grills

Just in case anyone is in the same situation I was as when I bought the car the two silver air vent knobs were missing and I wanted to reinstall them:

I have never done anything like this before so it was a bit daunting but thought I would give it a go. Unfortunately you need to buy the complete vent assembly and cannot buy just the silver bits, these are the two parts which are handed:

Firstly you need to remove the centre console, the speaker bit first, there are three metal clips at the window screen side if you get a small screwdriver in and lever it up you will be able to pop this off (be careful not to damage the trim!). You will see at the bottom of the cover are four locating tabs:

You will see the three metal clips at the top of the speaker cover and the locating tabs below. Notice there are four hex screws you need to undo:

There are two more hex screws underneath the coin tray, to remove this slide a slim blade behind the top and gently slide upwards and out - be careful as this is very flimsy and scratches easily. You will see below the two screws I mean which also attached to the sat nav screen if you have one I take note of where the metal tabs are for the screen as you will need to fit back in the same location which takes a bit of jiggling:

Once the hex screws have been removed (take note on where they came from as there are three different types), place your fingers behind the trim either side of the centre speaker and gently pull the trim away, easing the side and bottom as you go. When you get to a certain point you will need to release the cable from the centre buttons, this has a tab that you press in to release the wires:

The centre trim should then pull away and looks like this from behind, you can also see the vents that are to be replaced with the opening/closing mechanisms:

JLR have changed the plastic 'bars' that open/close the vent so you will need to fit these, they have slightly larger locating balls that fit into the original sockets. See below the complete assembly with the 'bar' taped to the side, which is how mine were delivered:

The old assemblies are held in with four lugs and are easy to remove. Unclip the plastic 'bar' and take note which socket was which as they are handed, reassemble with the new vent assembly and 'bar' in the correct socket:

Reassembly is in the reverse order placing the bottom of the console in first, remembering to reconnect the cable and ensuring that the sat nav metal tabs go back in the right place (you will see this is half way in which is after I have jiggled the metal tabs to ensure they go back correctly):

Then the end result, very pleased Very Happy . This is an easy job if you take your time, it took longer to type this than actually do the job! Hope this helped.

All how-tos should be like this Smile I like photos Smile FL2 TD4 GS 60 reg Facelift - so many issues
2019 DS. Terribly unreliable.
Sold DS for a 2021 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV. Fingers crossed....
Sold Outlander for a 2014 SD4 SE Tech because I’m mental
Now greatly regret selling the Outlander. MPG of the FL2 is atrocious and so are the fuel bills. Fun though 😎
Couldn’t afford the fuel bills so back to an older Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV. Significantly better than I remembered it to be…

£70 plus vat. Make sure you buy the right one as they are handed, your supplier should be able to get you the right one.

I've just got 2 from Dan at Duckworths and paid £32 for the door side one and £55 for the central one, both including vat 😊

Oh dear... I've just lost one of mine down the hole.
I've got the silver bit, but the clip behind has dropped down into the abyss and I can't see it.

What is the next step once i get the centre dash panel out? "We're in danger, we've got to get out."
"What are you talking about?"
"I've been called a ponce."

If you have the "Silver Bit" why bother looking for the old clip. Find a similar clip at a motor factors (or similar shop) or get out the super glue possibly. Be careful though if you take off the other one for a pattern.

So the clips can be replaced with a similar part can they?

I was more concerned about the old one falling into the fan and making a racket for the rest of all time. "We're in danger, we've got to get out."
