Clutch slip and crankshaft seal leak

Hi Folks,

So the heap of junk that is my Freelander has been in the garage today.
The rear diff needs a low level repair (£626).
However they could not get the clutch to slip (neither could I today yet a week ago it was lipping badly and juddering). They did notice 'wetness' suggesting a leaking crankshaft seal. It's not at the clutch end but could this contribute in any way to a slipping clutch ( I can't see how but I thought I'd ask)?

May have or still may be worth giving landrover customer services a ring, regarding your low level diff repair. My wife owns an 2008 FL2 with 86k on the clock. We need a low level diff repair, like yourself. Took it to an indy gearbox repair specialist to diagnose issue, they said £500 all in. Then decided to ring land rover customer care, to my surprise they offered me 33% towards a diff repair, if I were to use a landy dealer. Then rung a landy dealer, did a bit of negotiating with them. Came to £419 inc diagnostic at £60 (negotiated down from (£120), to diagnose fault I already new I had.
The landy has a fsh, but not full land rover sh. Landy has now gone.

Hi Boroboy,

My car is a 2010 with 52k miles. I have used customer services before when the front transfer box needed replacing at 35k miles. So I might give them a go. I thought the dealer quoted price of £626 wasn't too bad.
What worries me more is the fact that the clutch has stopped slipping. I do get a jolt and a thud sometimes when pulling away in first. That must be the dual mass flywheel I reckon. Whether it's on its way out or not I don't know.
So I'll get the diff fixed but will probably get rid of the car soonish.

The clutch supposed to have an auto adjust mechanism fitted, that sticks, perhaps it just auto adjusted now its ok??

Many/most FL2 clutch problems, particularly intermittent ones, seem to be nothing to do with the clutch itself but are something sticking in the actuation or adjustment mechanisms. And for such issues a few good pumps of the pedal often fix them, at least temporarily.

My clutch slips from time to time - when it does I just pump the clutch pedal a few times with the engine off, letting it come up quickly but not violently, and it's then OK again for a few more months.

Worth a try for anyone whose clutch is slipping, and could save you the cost of a new one.

Having heard so many horror stories regarding the clutch I just assumed that mine was just another statistic.
It would be great if it is indeed ok. Certainly the last couple of days it's been fine so fingers crossed.

The clunk you are hearing when you let the clutch up is probably the wretched dual mass flywheel that has deceased. Had this on a Rav 4, 3 times on the manual box in 100,000 miles. If you let the clutch up quick the clonk is the flywheel taking up the slack where the buffer springs are fitted, the clunk then breaks the friction between the plate and the flywheel allowing the clutch system to slip till you push the clutch down again and let it up slowly then the drive returns to normal. New flywheel n clutch is the only answer and dont be tempted to use one of the cheap solid flywheels, especially if you are towing. Biggest killer of dual mass flywheel is a wet shoe bottom slipping off the clutch pedal.

That's certainly what it feels like.
Interestingly the car has been driving well since Tuesday (whine from the diff but no clutch slip).
I suspect that it won't last!

I know what you mean about getting rid. I'm not there yet with the landy though.
Prob with the dmf is if you need to check it, you would then have to split the box. If it does need replacing, good point to change the clutch kit too. This is how it can get expensive.
Not just relating to landrovers though. I've had two new gearboxes (m32's), 1 clutch kit & a dmf replaced under Vaux warranty with my previous Astra 1.4t. Over a 3 month period. Was only 2 year old, at the time. That car has now long gone lol.
£626 not bad for the diff repair. Worth a try. You may get over a 33% contribution from landrover, as yours is newer. To be fair, I wasn't expecting to get anything. So 33% was a bonus. Vaux certainly for that age of vehicle, would have gave zero.
In 3 years of ownership (20,000 miles), not including normal wear & tear/serviceable items, brake pads & discs, fuel filters etc. I've changed the front wheel bearing/hub, anti shudder/cut off valve (did that myself), now diff repair (going in today) & repaired the rear brake light cluster, due to water ingress and a new battery. So regarding reliability, I'd give it an average score lol. Landy has now gone.

Hi Boroboy,

Yes I've contacted customer services. They were great when the front transfer box needed replacing.
I really like the Freelander and perhaps that makes it feel all the worse when it lets you down.

I hope land rover offer you a contribution. Just dropped the landy off, hopefully all will be sorted tomorrow.
You could buy any car, have problems with it. Sometimes its better the devil you know, than the devil you don't. Landy has now gone.

Thanks Boroboy. Good luck with yours. I'll stick with mine for a bit yet. If it wasn't for some other bills recently I would have traded it for a 2012 or something. However for now I'll make do and give it a stern talking to.
