Nipped to the shops on the way home from work came out to find someone has scraped my rear door.
Damage must have been caused by a large vehicle as the door handle has a slight mark on it and lower half of door has rippled with a crease. Will post a picture tomorrow.

This has been my worst day ever , first the tyres now the damage.

See if theres any cctv cameras in the area or shops that might have got a shot of what it was??

I asked the local spar shop if the caught the incident on CCTV unfortunately the camera didn't cover that direction at the time of the impact it did catch a Tesco home delivery vehicle entering the road junction.
Been advised I will require a new rear door as it has rippled the metal due to the metal hitting the impact reinforcement.

Don't those trucks have trackers fitted to them? Might be worth phoning tescos and seeing what van it was and where it went. Always worth a ask

Well yes, are there other paint marks on you car from the other vehicle, plus it did turn out the be a Tesco truck that will have damage too, so as suggested if you can find out if there was one there when you were it might be worth chasing up?

I doubt they will fit a new door if the frame isnt twisted they will fit a new skin, and thats a thing to watch out for because unless the person who fits it is very skilled you can always tell its been done, Ive had one done way back in the past, it wasnt very good.
Insist on a whole new door.

There is no paint marks left by the other vehicle as I suspect it was done by the Tesco driver who must have been distracted and collided with my freelanders side. The vehicle in question that Tesco says was in the area had grey unpainted bumpers this explains why there is no paint marks left. The Tesco vehicle has scrapes which line up with my damage on the front bumper. The driver said to his supervisor that he hit a hedge in a rural lane as he's trying the usual to avoid liability so I am leaving it to my insurance to decide.
My freelander was collected by the insurance who took it in for assessment to which he says I need a new rear door as the collision has affected the impact bar inside the door which has then caused the steel outer to protrude in a budge higher then the original surface.

I was wondering if I fitted side steps would this have protected the side better or even damaged the offending vehicle more.

I doubt side steps would protect you from a lorry they would be too low? a MINI maybe, plus it might have shoved them and damaged the chassis too?
If its only got the door and nothing else maybe you go off the best you could in the situation, at least that part is easily replaced unlike a rear wing/arch say??

Side steps wouldn't have made any difference to a Tesco truck.

When I was side swiped by a car on a dual carriage way, my side steps took the brunt and trashed his alloy wheels and lower doors, which was mildly satisfying.

However, the downside was (as suggested) the mounting brackets were shot to hell - they're not designed to take load in that direction - so I had to have new side steps on top of the minor damage to the rear nearside wing.

Nett result was that the damage to may actual vehicle was proabably reduced by having the side steps, but I had the PITA factor of getting the insurance company to cough for replacing the side steps as opposed to "fixing" them.....

My insurance company told me that my premium would not be affected as I have a full protected no claims bonus and guaranteed hire car of the same size. I had to send photos to the repairer for the assessor to examine who phoned me and said he is recommending fitting a new rear door. The body shop also gives a 5 yr guarantee on the repair.

I Recorded my call with the insurance company when I reported the claim.

I am lucky my car only had a damaged door and didn't look like this when i came out of the shop.

Bit of T-Cut should sort that out

I like how they turned the front wheel into the kerb on a hill so it doesnt roll away if the brake fails, looks like the driver practices good driving techniques

I cant believe a Tesco truck did that and no one saw a thing.

My home town is like a Ghost town as this was after 9:00 pm so only a few passing vehicle were about. Local spar open till 11:00 pm.

I also noticed this morning whilst filling up with diesel that there seams to be quite a lot of dirt in the filler neck how has this got past the fuel cap? How do I clean this out without adding any more to the fuel tank?
