I have had an annoying interior knocking sound from the rear, offside first then a month later the near side. It progressively got worse but a couple of local garages could not locate the problem, although they could hear it clearly when driving.

I checked myself and could not find anything amiss with any suspension components, a few Land Rover specialist said it could be the Shock Absorbers at £160 a corner !!

Long story short, I took the car to Hi Range near Burton Upon Trent, great bloke if you need spares are repairs, and he put it on the ramp and again could not find anything…. Until he check the large Rubber weights that are attached to the side of each rear shock, it moved up and down freely on the shaft it is located on. This is not meant to happen and the up and down movement was actually knocking on the shock causing the annoying noise.

No cost and now fixed with a little tiger seal.

I just changed both rear shocks and now also have a dull knocking noise at low speed over small bumps...could this be the same thing?

I am not sure exactly what you mean by the rubber pieces...Sorry for ignorance but could you explain more, maybe a picture...

If youhave a knock after replacing them then I suspect something else is causing it.

My issue was the rubber weight type this to the one side of the shocker assembly, this has come loose and was moving up and down causing the annoying knocking sound in the cab.

If you grab the rubber weight, or whatever it actually is, and try to move it up and down it can cause it to know on the underside of the spring bottom mount.

Is that the bump stop?

No not a bump stop that I am aware of, its a rubber component on the side of the shocker.

Look at the rear shocker and you will see a rubber component to the one side, attached under the bottom coil over mount.

You can see it just above the top of the tyre without jacking it up.

i know what you mean...i replaced both of the when i did the shocks....either they are on wrong....which i doubt as its a one screw thing or my noise is something else

Although i will go out and check that they are not moving freely as you said yours was...will report back....

I think these are vibration dampers. I had one detach from its shaft which causes an annoying knock. I just araldited in the centre of the shaft. No more knocking and less noise altogether. Easy job.

I think we are talking about the rubber round 'damper' in the middle of the photo?

I have checked mine and they seem tight and not moving..so i guess i have something else to investigate....

Yes, that's the one. Sorry it's not your problem - that would be too easy!

Mine was knocking slightly on the rear suspension and it turned out to be a failed rear drop link ball joint which can only be tested properly with the rear wheels of the ground.
