Australia 2008 Freelander 2 TD4 HSE Auto Zermatt Silver

I'll add my support for the Land Rover, this IS an FL2 forum so you'd expect us to like them Smile

I test drove a Rav4, and CRV (and Misu L200 Embarassed ) on the same day as the LR2, back to back and the LR2 is in a different league in the way that it drives, so much more composed on the road (the CRV was like a boat, and as for the pickup Shocked ) . Then the LR dealer suggested I try the auto, I've never owned an auto before (our other car is a BMW 330 softop), but it just makes the car IMHO.

We ended up with a TD4 HSE Auto, and almost a year later I haven't regretted it, both the wife and I prefer to drive it over the BMW, they're different beasts of course but the FL2 is just so nice & relaxing & comfortable to drive. The beemer is great fun to blast around in, but we argue over who gets to take the Landy.

Go for the FL2 Auto, you choose the spec, although I'm happy I went HSE.

ATB,

Mike

Why nobofy compares the FL2 with the Tiguan and the Kuga. I have just bought Auto And Motor Sport magazine, there is a comparison of 11 SUVs. The first was Tiguan, the second Kuga and the FL2 was in a third place. I haven't yet read the details....

I don’t think that the motoring press generally are very fare when doing comparisons between different similar car models. They tend to pick out a popular make that many would like to own, compare it with some poorer or much more expensive models and then give the popular model they personally like “the BEST BUY label”. They may even get a big backhander for giving “their car” the best marks Evil or Very Mad . Most of the cr@p they write I take with a big pinch of salt.

In reality, the FL2 should NOT be compared with lesser beings such as the Tiguan and Kuga which are built for a completely different market. Also, price and quality puts the FL2 into another class. To get a fair comparison of the different similar models, they should be tested and tried in exactly the same way and for what they are capable of. For example, the VW and Fraud would not survive an off-road drive that the FL2 would just lap up.

In Norway, the FL2 is NOT popular with the motoring magazines that either choose to ignore it or test it up against cheaper urban 4x4’s which will always win on price alone Shocked . The FL2 is seldom compared with the X3 or MB-equivalent (whatever that may be?), and when they do the Landy gets the thumbs down for some idiotic reason Shocked . The FL2 has been tested with RAV4 and CRV which also get better recognition because of the cheaper price Rolling Eyes . Also, it would seem that problems from owning a British car still lingers on and memories of the FL1 are not forgotten. However I have noticed that the British motoring press give the FL2 a much better faring up against the competition which maybe due to they prefer British to Japanese or German makes Thumbs Up

I for one, am glad that there are not too many FL2’s on the road here in Norway, and smile to myself when the car often attracts admiring looks from onlookers – a sort of exclusiveness like owning a Ferrari or something like that (like a Land Rover Freelander 2 Whistle ). 2007 Freelander 2 HSE TD4 Manual with Premium Pack & Moonroof.

I couldn't agree more. What anoys me is the blatant plagiarism, every report on a FL2 mentions poor rear legroom and too expensive, copied straight off the Whatcar website pre launch of the car. CC magazine just tested an X-trail at £33,000 now thats expensive. Evil or Very Mad

In the above mentioned comparison from Auto Motor and Sport, the FL2 lost to the Tiguan because of driving dynamics - it lenaed too much when turning, almost lifting one wheel, only to be saved by the ESP. Something like this was also mentioned by Consumer Reports when in one test it lifted a wheel few inches from the grouind, because of what it was rated (by ConsumerReports) wiith poor traction control. As they said the Tiguan drove "almost like a Golf". The FL2 was more comoftartable when driving and of course was rated the best for off-road use.

The Tiguan had better braking, lights (altough it was fitted with bi-xenons in the test and the FL2 with halogens), visibility (all-round 360 dgrees and forward when parking), cargo capacity and price. As the test involved more driving/braking/manouvering tests, the more sporty, uncomfortable Kuga also beat the FL2 by one point).

United Kingdom 2009 Freelander 2 TD4 HSE Auto Lago Grey

I sat in a Tiguan and got out again.. the look and feel of the plastic switchgear was just awful, I've come across better quality lego sets. I expected it to be as good as Passat, Golf and Toureg but it was nowhere near that class.

Going slightly off topic I was very impressed with their Passat CC though, thats a lovely looking car. 58 HSE, auto, lago grey, tints. Mine and my dogs Storm and Sky
TT Quattro, black. Ers.
AC Cobra rep in build. Ars.

United Arab Emirates 2008 LR2 i6 HSE Auto Stornoway Grey

I love my LR2 (FL2) and out of all of the vehicles I have driven I can safely say the inside of the LR2 is one of the nicest places I have had the pleasure of being.

I find it very relaxing place to be and the vehicle I can get out of at the other end and still feel fresh, but it also gives me a great big grin every time I see it and drive it.
Whilst some reviews doubt its handling I see nothing wrong with it at all, both on and off road it is comfortable and quick enough. As the owner of two other cars, one of which a sporty hatchback and the other one of the best handling sports cars available I see absolutely nothing wrong with the LR2's on-road handling, and whilst it is not as sharp as the X3 I personally don't think that is what I would want from a 4x4 vehicle.

For me the X3 is too ugly and the interior a little too basic looking (Not saying the LR2 isn't basic) just like the new MB thing is, where as the FL2 just has a robust but pretty look to it in my eyes. However I would like iDrive in my LR2 Shocked

As has already been said though it is all a matter of personal choice and requirements from the vehicle Thumbs Up Once you've tasted GREY you'll never go back!

Thanks all of you for some interesting comments...

The eldest child is six feet tall, so vehicles like the Kuga and Tiguan simply aren't big enough in the back (nor wide enough really) for three fighting teenagers. The Rav4 was OK as well in the back, but not really in the same league as the FL2.

The BMW seems good on paper (especially as a company car with lower emissions), but not when you need to pay extra for all the good bits (Satnav, leather, etc.) that the FL2 includes as standard in the better models.

I think I'll arrange a test drive, and perhaps even try the auto...

Paul

United Kingdom 2007 Freelander 2 TD4 SE Auto Stornoway Grey

Test drove an X-trail before I tried a manual FL2 and it was terrible. Also tested the CRV which was better than the X-trail but felt like an MPV.X3 2.0 litre manual was fantastic to drive-amazing handling, but I think I would find the ride too hard after a few weeks. Also tested the Outlander, which I was going to buy, until I drove a freelander.I was quite happy with the new Freelander I had bought until I went to an off-road day at Skipton and drove an auto. The car was fantastic, so I swapped for a new SE Auto.Done 16000 in both cars and not had the slightest problem.

Save yourself £9000 on list price and buy my Freelander(see for sale section) Stornaway grey SE auto with 18" alloys

Not that I could buy your car you have for sale, but the one you are selling is a SE auto as well, so I didn’t understand why going off-raod made you swap it for a new SE auto.
