Hissing noise o removal of filler cap.

I had the hissing problem with 4000miles up, and the dreaded phantom hesitation, dealer fitted new cap which cured that problem, but have the hesitation problem still and it seems l/r and dealer have decided I am on my own now I am out of warranty, as they cannot come up with a cure . (see my posts on this matter ) I think this situation does not inspire confidence in the brand , so from thinking about changing for a discovery sport, I think it will be back to bmw, or perhaps a japanese model.

I am beginning to think that FL2s are like wines, some years are excellent, others are not so good. For me the older vintages appear to be generally better and the 2011 was one of the poorer years. But as with Beaujolais Nouveau even the latest pressings can be varied (or even "corked" resulting in a hissing noise when you remove the stopper). Of course some just develop a whine from the rear axle. 3 x FL1 2 manual + 1 auto

I have had "reduced engine performance" about 30 minutes after the last two fill-ups. On each occasion the filler cap was not venting properly and appears to be stuck (again). Yesterday I had to stop/start 6 times in 20 minutes but no problem on the way home. I assume that no OBD codes on my reader simply means I have to invest in a better reader... [edit: just ordered an i930]

I am starting to suspect that I've let the tank run too low and some rubbish is causing an issue with diesel supply. BTW this was not supermarket fuel.

Can anyone confirm that reduced engine performance can be activated by low fuel? I've not seen it but it is happening 30 minutes later. That's some mighty strange software!

I'm also seeing reduced MPG, even when coasting.

I have had two instances of reduced engine power on different FL2s, the message would come up when going up a hill or accelerating. If you stopped the vehicle and restarted the message went away. Both cars were OK after fuel filter replacement. On each occasion no fault codes produced. Of course this doesn't prove anything conclusively but I have had no problems since. 3 x FL1 2 manual + 1 auto

My son borrowed my car today and he has just called in to say that he is getting the "Reduced Engine Performance" message. Out of the four FL2s we have owned, three of them have done this. Next stop is to call out LR Assist. What a joke! 3 x FL1 2 manual + 1 auto

Change your fuel filter Thumbs Up
On other cars with similar fuel cap problem I just drilled a new vent hole which cured it -I remember having a Mini years ago and the fuel pump sucked so hard unvented that it buckled the fuel tank almost turning it inside out Shocked No Longer the owner of a 2013MY Fuji White GS

Thanks Westville. I think you are spot on. The fuel filter (allegedly fitted in July) is either clogged or dated 2007!

I've ordered an iCarSoft i930 which, hopefully, will indicate low fuel rail pressure. The dealer might sort it out for nothing but if I have to hire a car for a week it'll be cheaper to do it myself, even with the 90 quid scanner. I also suspect that they will blame it on a recent contamination and slap me with a bill for diagnostics and host of parts that have nothing to do with the problem. So taking it in is likely to be a total waste of time and money.

Well had a couple attempts at freeing the filler cap valve but this did not work. Bought new filler cap a couple of weeks ago and no hissing now.
