I think sometimes the difference in front rolling diameter and rear can put excessive strain on the 4wd unit/haldex .I could be wrong but was hoping someone could clarify,it used to knack the old freelander centre coupling |

I think the OP means "Ok wife's freelander needs front tyres, rears ok" |

The FL2 system is more sophisticated and doesn't suffer from the same issues as the FL1. Most of the time the FL2 is running in (more or less) 2wd anyway, and when the Haldex is engaged (when moving off from rest, in special programs, or when wheel slip is detected) it has various protection mechanisms built in which prevent damage.

News on rear is correct as expressed above but not as critical on a vehicle such as the FL2 with safety features fitted. I would strongly advise same brand/type of tyre as those remaining. AWD are designed to handle indifferent wheel diameters created by wear but mixing different brands/types and wear levels can fall outside engineered tolerances. MY15

My last FL2 was a fleet car and they were in charge of the maintenance, so when it came to tyre renewal time, the fronts were down to 2mm but the rears still had 3.5mm, I was expecting them to say fit new fronts and leave the rears as they still had a few thousand on them on their rejection limit, but no I was surprised they said, no on FL2 we renew the whole lot at the same time prevent any possible drive problems later, so I guess if they do it then they must have experience its worthwhile as in the past nothing was changed until it had to be?. |

new tyres would be same make/type. seems strange ,I would rather have a tail end slide than understeer hence me thinking best tread up front………... |
