Right. I know I am likely to need winter tyres after moving house. That's fine. I've read most of the posts here debating various options.

However, when visiting sites to actually buy said tyres, the ratings really confuse me.

I was looking at some Vredestien which seem to come recommended and their wet weather rating is an E.... Surely winter tyres are good in snow, ice AND the wet. In Scotland winters are generally a mix of snow ice and rain. I would hate to spend that much money for a potentially more dangerous Tyre.

Or am I reading into those wrong? FL2 TD4 GS 60 reg Facelift - so many issues

EU law requires all tyres to have these labels, the tyres tests conducted are above the recommended operating temperatures for winter tyres so they therefore don't score very well.

Ratings are measured under specific conditions too - vary the conditions (as in the real world) and the results may vary too.

My GG ATs don't have a particularly good wet rating (and indeed they can occasionally lock up on wet roads) but they're very good at cutting through standing water. Another tyre may have a better rating but be less good at the standing water.

So take the ratings as an indication of performance under test conditions, not of how they will perform under all circumstances on the road.

I've just checked the rating for my Avon Ranger Ice - they score E for wet and F for fuel consumption, but in practice they're absolutely fine for both!

I bought a set of Nokian Weatherproof tyres so far so good. They are a winter tyre developed to run in summer as well. They have been given an A rating for wet weather driving. Have used them in the wet quite a bit lately and think they are as good as Nokian say. Very good in dry as well and so quiet compared to continental cross contacts.
