Sun Roof Tinting

I am considering fitting tinted protective film on the sun roof of my FL2 to reduce the UV and heat from the sun comming through the glass. Has this been done before?

Hi AndyC
My FL2 is fitted with the pullout blinds and works well. But were I stay it gets very hot and the sun gets to you. The day temp gets to + 40°C on hot days.

the glass fitted in the sunroof in the LR2 is in fact I.R. resistant - taken directly from the LR site

Quote:
The glass is specially formulated to filter the infrared spectrum – letting in the light, but not the heat.
I.R. light is the light wave that carries heat, not UV light as most suspect. Tinting glass to prevent UV is useless since glass absorbs ALL UV light anyway. You will NEVER get sunburn from sunlight through glass. I also think you will find that no one will tint a sunroof, as it is also safety glass (similar to the windscreen). The heat you are feeling in the day is most likley from the general ambient heat, and having the sunroof or not will not make any difference. i.e. the metal roof still heats up like a hotplate in the sun, and therefore heats the interior like an oven.

I laugh at LR salesmen here in Oz who say they cannot sell a sunroof in a LR2 because of the Summer heat! Personally I think that a sunroof in a car opens up the interior and makes it more light and airy. Making a much more pleasant place to be Smile ______________________________

I thought this too, but then i get thinking sunbed lamps are made out of glass and they burn you if your in too long, so it must be able to pass through certain glass Rolling Eyes

sunbed light glass is special one that doesn't filter UV.

The sunroof filters some IR but not all, so it heatrs up the cabin more than the metal roof for sure since some IR gets in anyway. Also the metal roof has some insulation it is not like you tuch the metal from the roof from the inside. So I also think in a heat it is better without the sun roof.

Agree with you Oceanic that the sunroof adds so much more light and even in the 50 degrees C we have here I wouldn't want it without.

The sunroof is not a major heat source in my opinion and instead the windscreen and side windows are. I have my side windows tinted and it makes a hell of a difference, and would have had the windshield done in a clear 3M heat rejecting film but for the high cost.....so instead I just park it with the rear facing the sun Very Happy Once you've tasted GREY you'll never go back!

I asked my local tint place about this. They said they would not tint the sunroof because if you get some bird Censored on it it will concentrate the heat and could shatter the glass. I'm not sure how true this is although they are a reputable tint place and they do the tinting for all the prestige cars in the city. I often see Ferraris and Lambos out the front.

I've had my front side windows and both sunroofs tinted since the first month that i got the vehicle. 16 months later and no problems, no regrets ... tinting was actually done at the LR dealer

Maybe they said they tinted the sunroof, but I doubt they actually did. It is already 'dark' glass, so with tint it would appear almost black to look through! ______________________________

Thanks for your feedback.
I am taking my FL2 to the local Tinting agent later this week, to see if he can do both sun roof's for me and get a quote. Have done all side windows and rear window with good results.

Sorry for digging up an old thread, but I am trying to get some answers about tinting the sunroofs in the Freelander 2.

I called my local tint place & they refused to tint the sunroofs, saying that "the tint could make the glass shatter because it's laminated like a windscreen"

I couldn't believe it so I called Land Rover Customer Service, the guy I spoke with had never heard of this, but he put me on hold to check with his supervisor, who came back & told me that "no you can't tint them because of safety reasons, in the event of an accident the emergency services would not be able to get into the vehicle through the sunroof"

I thought what a load of BS, a vehicle without a sunroof would have all it's windows tinted so it would be the same problem!

So I tell the Customer Service guy what the tinter told me "the tint could make the glass shatter" and he said "oh yeah, that too" which again means he didn't have a clue.

I found a couple of threads here on the forum, where people have had thier sunroofs tinted, in some cases even by the Land Rover dealer, so what gives????

The glass sunroof does not have much of a tint from the factory. I had both of mine tinted along with the front windows ... highly recommend it (done at my LR dealer)

I have asked my dealer to tint the sunroof windows on the car I am waiting to pick up. I was disappointed there wasnt a slide cover that was solid. He readily agreed to do without a charge.
