Its a legal requirement to have the towing mirrors, and these have to be removed again when the towing vehicle is unhitched from the caravan. As far as I am aware, it doesn't matter whether you have a rear view camera fitted or not.

Regarding the position of the camera, its not been fitted yet. Hope to have it fitted when caravan goes in for its service in July.

By the way, the newer version of Garmin, the 770 will NOT fit. Garmin have made the casing bigger by 20mm and it definitely will not fit behind the aperture in the dash.

And unfortunately on 13MY GS they have fitted a display screen for radio, cd and phone so back to sucker on screen. On three previous GS I had always used space for sat nav.
Still 13MY has quite a few decent upgrades, standard leather with heated front seats a big bonus. All FL2's (3) Gone

for the Garmin 760, these are the dimensions:

Physical dimensions 7.4"W x 4.5"H x .9"D (18.7 x 11.4 x 2.3 cm)
Display size, WxH 6.1"W x 3.4"H (15.4 x 8.6 cm); 7" diag (17.8 cm)

To put it in the dash, did you need to cut any plastic? Or did it fit "like a glove"?

I fitted a Garmin 2699 and may fit the reversing camera if I can justify the £130 cost.

I went for the 6" display because when I measured, the microphone for the Bluetooth hands free phone would have been covered by the surround on a 7" unit.

In the meantime I fitted a rear view mirror with a screen which has 2 inputs, one for a cheap reversing camera and one for a camera on the back of our caravan.

It got a little messy getting the video from the caravan to the car, in the end I bought a cheap 2.4gHz transmitter/receiver, fitted the transmitter at the front of the caravan and the receiver in the spare wheel well in the car, Ideally I would have used a spare pin on the 13 pin socket but the cables going into the socket had been completely sealed with silicon.

I did it this way because the quoted range of the Garmin camera is a little marginal from the back of the caravan to the head unit also I didn't want to keep manually switching between the SatNav and the camera.

In answer to your question about the Garmin 760, it does fit like a glove. There are a few plastic "pips" which need to be removed from the rear of the Freelander cubby hole plastic housing. If these are not removed, the Garmin sits a little back from the facia, so removing these pips with a Stanley knife means the Garmin fits beautifully.

Note: the new Dezl 770 will NOT fit, The casing is about 20mm bigger than the 760.

Like Still Lost in France, the advantage of fitting the Garmin against a tablet is that when the ignition is switched off the Garmin powers down after 20 seconds or so!

I was not concerned about the microphone issue as I already had a Bury system 8 which had bluetooth for hands free.

I'm still investigating camera options as the the Garmin BC-20 went out of production (the new BC-30 camera is not backward compatible with the 760 - thanks Garmin!!!) but Garmin are producing another batch of BC-20's available in August. The camera, when connected to the reverse lights on the caravan automatically triggers the screen to display camera and then goes back to Sat Nav when reverse deselected.

The tomtom was really good but when it powered down it really went into a sleep mode . If left for any length of time unpowered the battery would die and would have to be manually restarted. I have subsequently fitted a tablet which goes into sleep mode when power is turned off , and resumes when power is on . In addition it will go into sleep mode if not used.

Looking to install Mr Garmin 2797 in same position. Only question I have is how does one switch it on as my on/off switch is on the rear.Switching off not a problem as it powers off after power lost

Its not a problem, the unit switches on when power is applied.

I need to push the on off button on the rear of mine to start it off

On the TomTom you have to set it to power up automatically. Suspect the Garmin is the same. Have a look in "settings" or check the manual (if you haven't got one it'll be online somewhere). Ex AA Series III LWB Safari - Gone

Well I never knew that just plugging it in switched it on so have learnt something there. I would prefer the unit to
be off until required so thinking of maybe adding a switch operated solenoid behind the unit so can be switched on and off from the switch.

All you have to do is power it from a supply that is controlled by the ignition. When you power the ignition the Garmin will start up & when you turn the ignition off, it will shut down, simple. (Now Sold). 2008 Freelander 2 (Nazca Sand) SE TD4 Auto. I would rather it was not on all the time hence the idea of the remote on off switch.
On another point have gone to have a look at sorting this and I am sure I will break the speaker surround in trying to
unclip it. Is there a secret as an alternative to brute force?
