Halogen Bulb Exploded. Glass Everywhere...

An Osram Nightbreaker+ bulb blew in my 2014 headlamp and shattered into tiny pieces. Whats with that? Any ideas?

I've been about to get most of the glass out but im wondering if its worth taking it to the dealer and hoping they don't notice its a non standard bulb. Do you think they be able to clean it out? There are still shards all over the place despite vacuuming the inside.

A friend suggest putting the 'stock' ones back in - if you get me... although im not too keen on that.

None of the lamps are covered under warranty, they are serviceable items, trying to pull a fast one and you're on a hiding to nothing really.

When the nightbreakers (which broke Laughing ) were fitted they were either a) faulty, b) contaminated, possibly by touching the glass envelope, this causes hot spots causing the lamp to blow.

It is quite unusual for them to explode though, was it a genuine nightbreaker or a fake, of which the online outlets are full of.

Oops. Don't get me wrong.. I know the lamp is covered. Was asking regarding the headlight unit itself - the whole inside is covered in shards. they've even got to the indicator! Just wondering if LR would clean it out. Feels like a long shot then I take it.

Cheers

I think the headlights are sealed, the clear front is bonded onto the housing, I think others have tried previously to separate them with little success.
How much glass is there?
The same lamps are used in dental lights which have safety features, obviously patients wouldn't want a gob full of glass and in 25 years I have never seen one explode as you describe.
Good luck with your efforts and keep us posted.

They will explode if they get wet, but inside a headlamp I would have thought it was fairly well sealed against water ingress, unless the rear cover wasnt fitted properly or its seal was intact?

Thanks guys. The seal is fine. I remember flashing someone a few times - perhaps this vibration from the solenoid was enough to pop the lens.

I'm going to get in touch with LR today.

Never touch the halogen glass, hot or cold, with fingers as traces of one's body oils and grease will be left of the glass. Procrastination, mankind's greatest labour saving device!
