England 2011 Freelander 2 SD4 XS Auto Lago Grey
Push Button Start problem

some times when i start my Freelander 2 it turns over two or three times before starting any one shed any light on what might be the problem it happens more when it as stood longer than a day i understand there should be a delay from pressing the button to when it turns over for the heater plugs to heat up, the heater plugs have been renewed

I wouldn't have thought for the last three to four months you would have had a delay for the glow plugs to kick in. You only get a delay in the cold weather, at the moment or even the last few months the starter will just spin it over with no delay. p****d off with a Digital Keyboard Warrior

Agree, the ambient temperature is too high for the car to activate the glow plugs, there will be no delay. More likely to be fuel related.

thank you for the replies i wasn't expecting a delay in there temps but it is the fact it turns over 2 or three time before starting so i am concerned it may be worse when the weather goes cold do you think it might be fuel pump

You could changed the fuel filter, or try a fuel additive to give the whole system a good clean. I have used this;

I wouldn't be concerned with 2 or 2 seconds, as it gets colder the Glow Plugs will come on. When it starts how does it run, lumpy, smokey Question p****d off with a Digital Keyboard Warrior

What do you mean by "it turns over two or three times before starting" ?
Do you mean:
1. The engine is turning 2-3 revolutions and then start, or
2. It tries to start and for starting it takes 2-3 cycles? By cycle, I mean 10-15 seconds of cranking.

If (1), then it's perfectly normal, because the engine ECU needs to turn the engine at least 2 complete revolutions in order to synchronize and know exactly the crank position. And for that it takes at least 2 revolutions, because the camshaft turns at half the crankshaft speed and on the camshaft is a sensor for its position.
So at least 2, 4, 6, etc revolutions until the ECU is satisfied and knows the shafts positions.

had similar issues for a few months until a few days ago when it wouldn't crank at all
investigations showed that the starter solenoid has died
new starter motor arriving tomorrow which im confident will fix the problem - FL2 3.2 i6 - There is no Replacement for Displacement

If my wife ever sells my stuff for what I told her I paid for it, there will be some bargains out there!

I've been having some problems for the last week. Sometimes it just clicks and sometimes it turns over once. A few more attempts and it kicks into life. Very strange and no error messages. Thanks to the info on here I have just ordered a starter motor solenoid repair kit @ £16.30 delivered. Got to be worth a punt over the price of a new starter. Mines a 57 plate td4 with 69k.

fitted the new bosch starter today (bought on ebay £165 new - half the price of what LR sell it for and its the identical part and model number that came off the car)

WOW what a difference, all the slow starts and clicks and thoughts of bigger problems now gone - its obviously been getting lame for the past year as this new one starts the car like its connected to a dozen 12v batteries! Delighted it was such an easy bolt off bolt on 20 minute job to cure a PITA problem - FL2 3.2 i6 - There is no Replacement for Displacement

If my wife ever sells my stuff for what I told her I paid for it, there will be some bargains out there!

I often wonder what the stop start car starters will be like after a few years, some could be restarting the car 100s of times a day in queuing traffic??
