fl2 rear diff

Hi all, been reading about faulty diffs. Went out jacked up rear nearside wheel, turned wheel by hand turned quitèabit, very clunky , noticed lot of play where shaft enters diff. Should I be worried!

All diffs are frightening when jacked up and the wheel rotated by hand, your worry is grinding, rumbling and sounds like a lorry in low gear struggling, if that is not happening keep driving and enjoy Cool my PC is slightly to the right of Genghis

No - in effect terrain response is active all the time, it's the special programs which aren't. In 'normal' mode the FL2 will still use 4wd when moving off from rest, changing to fwd as the speed increases. And any signs of wheel slip or loss of stability and the 4wd will re-engage. The way it uses its 4wd is what sets the FL2 apart from other Haldex-equipped vehicles.

I understood the Freelander never drops below 10% on the rear, or is that only later versions? my PC is slightly to the right of Genghis

The LR docs don't seem to specify a minimum torque transfer explicitly, but they make various references to no torque transfer or torque dropping to zero for both Gen 3 and Gen 4 Haldex. Thus, I think that torque transfer can be zero (or as close to it as makes no difference) for all FL2s whatever their Haldex gen or MY.

assuming no speed differential across the haldex? Otherwise the swash system on gen3 would activate?

The swash system in the Gen 3 drives the hydraulic pump and generates the hydraulic pressure (Gen 4 uses an electric pump), but the control module and control valving will ultimately determine whether that pressure gets to the clutch plates. But, of course, a speed differential across the Haldex is exactly when the Haldex will engage, in pretty much any mode and circumstances.
