St Abbs Lifeboat to close after 110 years

I came across this on Disco and would like to share it here Sad

http://www.disco3.co.uk/forum/topic129123.html

As someone who grew up in the area I have seen divers in their droves using these waters and met many even in Yorkshire who visit regularly. I also know many lives would of been lost without the station Shocked

Please sign this petition if you would like to show your support Bow down

SWMBO's family lost nearly every male member in 1881 as did many families in the area because of the Eyemouth disaster so this is an important issue and still painful to some - http://www.scottisharchivesforschools.org/...saster.asp

This comes on top of cutbacks to coastgaurd and search & rescue Rolling Eyes Wanted a Series 2 LR since childhood but previously owned MY16 Disco Sport HSE TD4 Auto, MY13 RR Sport Black Edition TDV6 Auto, MY10 RR Sport HSE TDV6 Auto, 2007 Freelander 1 Freestyle TD4 Soft Top, 2009 Freelander 2 GS TD4 Auto, 2007 Freelander 2 GS TD4, 2004 Disco 2 Metropolis Auto, 2002 Disco 2 GS, 2000 Freelander 1 SE TD4 SW

I appreciate the humour CG but I'm not going to go down that road Laughing

All I'll say is that it doesn't matter which side of Hadrians wall you're from - if your're enjoying the beautiful coast and get into trouble you just want the quickest rescue possible Bow down Wanted a Series 2 LR since childhood but previously owned MY16 Disco Sport HSE TD4 Auto, MY13 RR Sport Black Edition TDV6 Auto, MY10 RR Sport HSE TDV6 Auto, 2007 Freelander 1 Freestyle TD4 Soft Top, 2009 Freelander 2 GS TD4 Auto, 2007 Freelander 2 GS TD4, 2004 Disco 2 Metropolis Auto, 2002 Disco 2 GS, 2000 Freelander 1 SE TD4 SW

Is this not something to do with the new Lifboats being bigger and kept permanently afloat, rather than winched up into a Lifeboat Station, and there not being suitable moorings at St Abbs? Everyone can spread it - Anyone can catch it. Stay home - the life you save can be your own!

From one of Euan's posts:

For example, from nowhere they have suddenly reported that our Lifeboat Station would require a £1.5m refit to take the slightly larger Atlantic 85 in 2 years time.....I'm sure this would come as a surprise to their own engineers who made the necessary changes 7-8 years ago Whistle
If releasing 30-odd bolts, adjusting the cradle width, and tightening the bolts again costs £1.5m,I'm in the wrong job Wink

This summed it up for me Bow down

Quick quiz question.....if you're in difficulty in the freezing North Sea,would you rather this came to get you, with a launch response time of around 4 minutes, twin Yamaha 75's and a hugely experienced crew with intimate local knowledge....

Or this...with a launch response time of 10 minutes,a single Mariner 50hp outboard, followed by a journey of approximately 20 minutes, with a rookie crew in board (that's assuming it can get out Eyemouth harbour in the first place in anything more than a moderate swell)

Thought so....but according to the RNLI Head of Operations coverage won't change Thud

My father in law spent some time on the fishing boats at Eyemouth and many a time they couldn't get in or out because of the weather and the risk using the entrance Confused Wanted a Series 2 LR since childhood but previously owned MY16 Disco Sport HSE TD4 Auto, MY13 RR Sport Black Edition TDV6 Auto, MY10 RR Sport HSE TDV6 Auto, 2007 Freelander 1 Freestyle TD4 Soft Top, 2009 Freelander 2 GS TD4 Auto, 2007 Freelander 2 GS TD4, 2004 Disco 2 Metropolis Auto, 2002 Disco 2 GS, 2000 Freelander 1 SE TD4 SW

I have been asked to pass this on -

euangibson wrote:
Nothing to do with permanent moorings at all.....we have an Inshore Lifeboat (ILB) and Eyemouth has an All-Weather Lifeboat which is permanently afloat. Our next boat,an a Atlantic 85 is also housed internally and our boathouse has already been made to suit,by the RNLI themselves.

They are proposing to add an additional small D-class to Eyemouth's ALB and close St Abbs completely. There was never any suggestion of a moored ALB at St Abbs, and a moored ILB wouldn't last very long before being smashed to bits

In seasonally low tides,Eyemouth's ALB won't be able to launch due to there being insufficient water in the harbour entrance, and if this coincides with rough seas, neither will their D-class.....leaving no cover for this stretch of coastline.

Our Atlantic 75 can operate in far rougher seas than a D-Class,and there has never been an occasion when St Abbs couldn't launch due to tidal restrictions.

Any more questions then I am happy to respond

I hope his helps Thumbs Up Wanted a Series 2 LR since childhood but previously owned MY16 Disco Sport HSE TD4 Auto, MY13 RR Sport Black Edition TDV6 Auto, MY10 RR Sport HSE TDV6 Auto, 2007 Freelander 1 Freestyle TD4 Soft Top, 2009 Freelander 2 GS TD4 Auto, 2007 Freelander 2 GS TD4, 2004 Disco 2 Metropolis Auto, 2002 Disco 2 GS, 2000 Freelander 1 SE TD4 SW
