Good old Daily Mail... Nothing is minor, everything is a rip off.

In 2013 the government estimated that there was 35m vehicles licensed for use on our roads. Given the Daily Mail's £1bn rip off that works out at an average rip off of either £28,571.42 or £28.57 per vehicle depending on which version of a billion you use.

'Premiums increase by an average of £28.57 per vehicle' doesn't sound nearly as dramatic as 'motorists hit by a £1bn rip off'.

Personally, I am not unhappy with my insurers, the premium or the renewal rates. The minute I am, I will be off elsewhere but that said, I have been with the current provider for the longest of any that went before.

Mine increased by over 25% so complained, they cut it back, but I said it was still over the top, they stated that was the lowest they could go. searched other providers bank and over 50's , worst quotes were the over 50's as the loading for additional drivers with their on cars under 50 ( both over 30) was exorbitant, best deal was Nationwide using LV with a few minor changes ( LR electric screen was a big excess compared to a normal screen) when I informed the previous insurer I would not renew another lower figure appeared, not good enough, saved £200 on both cars. my PC is slightly to the right of Genghis
2012 HSE SD4 In Orkney Grey now gone, best car ever.

Every year now I go through the process of challenging premium increases. Sometimes they get reduced and I insure both our cars again but mostly what they offer isn't good enough so I consult the meercats which my 21/2yr old grand daughter approves of as she loves the cuddlies.

The whole process takes less than an hour of my time and I usually save between £100 & £250 on the premiums initially demanded, I'm now paying less than I was 4 years ago with my cover and excesses at the same levels on both cars.

On line comparison sites make the task simple,I don't really understand why everybody doesn't use them and save money

I do not use price comparison sites as the one time I did I was bombarded with calls from ambulance chasing parasites even though I hadn't had a claim in over 25 years. I really liked the Saga policy but within 3 years the price had doubled so I had to obtain a price match quote (comparison sites not accepted) which they matched - then within 3 years doubled again so I vowed I would never use them again but they send me yearly pleas. With Direct Line at the moment (We are not on price comparison sites) but must admit that the excesses are high. Silver 2009 HSE

Comparison sites are all very well if you're not bothered about the exact cover you're provided with, you have a bog standard car, and are a bog standard person, but, it's very hard to get a true comparison of what you're getting from them. You ask for extras or a certain excess and then on the comaprison, they aren't what you asked for. Mad

If, like mine, your car is modified, or if you want off-road use, or you're young/inexperienced, or you want to ensure good customer service and good cover, this is where a proper broker, like sponsors A-plan, makes all the difference. Above all, you get to speak to a real human being!

Since my FL2 was written off, and the evevitable battle afterwards (LV, FWIW), my insurance buying techique is to speak to A-plan and phone around a few insurance companies that I would be happy with and as long as I get a reasonable price, that's fine. There are cheaper companies out there, but you get what you pay for come claim time. It's easy to think, "Well, I probably won't claim anyway so it doesn't matter", but you could regret it.

I'm currently with NFU as they offered a very good deal (which they haven't for a long time!) and have a branch just a few miles away. Was with A-plan previously and would be happy to go with them again too (but didn't make a claim) - there wasn't a great price hike either. Freelander 2 2007 TD4 Manual HSE Tambora Flame

its a point of view I guess but all I can say is that I compare the cover offered, the excesses requested and find I can get the same for less on comparison sites - every year.

Whether we are bog standard I don't know, our cars FL2 and a Toyota are as they are with some minor mods like side steps that I always declare. The companies are all brand names and I admit I haven't had experience of claimimg yet.

When I was with LV via a broker in the past, and DID have to claim I was not overly impressed.

Everybody to their own but I resent being suckered by insurance companies who rely on customer inertia to try to screw the max they can out of me every renewal date.

Not suggesting at all that you shouldn't do some shopping around, and I don't doubt you can reduce the quote. I'll always get a lower quote than the renewal too. I think most people do realise this now and do go elsewhere. Thumbs Up

My D3 is remapped with an uprated intercooler, V8 brakes and blanked EGRs so an online quote isn't possible at all for me! It also does in excess of 20k a year and needs Class 1 business use cover which also wouldn't go down as favourably with a comparison site as with a broker or speaking directly to the insurer. Wink

When I say "bog standard" people, I just mean not young (or perhaps old) or with past covictions etc. (which is not me either). Thumbs Up Freelander 2 2007 TD4 Manual HSE Tambora Flame

Yup I can see the problem you'd have online with those specs!! In comparison our cars are definitely bog standard Laughing

Today am seething having just received house insurance renewal which has gone up another £100 with nothing changing our end. Getting decent contents cover is problematic for us as our belongings are a bit like your car due to our art collection Big Cry

Getting a quote anywhere else proving impossible as about to move house and no-one really interested it seems until we are in new address. I don't know which I despise most banks or insurance companies!!

We too are in the process of packing the house up ready to go into storage for a few months... It seems that the storage companies have that all well sewn up with insurance being compulsory and only them selling it.

Have been to / phoned a number of insurance brokers but each tell us that the only option is to take the storage company's inflated price policy at £x per £thousand per week. One would imagine the only real (and probably very low) risk is fire in these places.
