Wheels get dipped!

Spent my bank holiday weekend cleaning my 19" alloys and spaying them with plasti-dip. Overall, pretty pleased. Will be putting them on when my trolley jack arrives.

Things I learned (most of which I had already picked up from youtube videos but in execution I didn't incorporate...):

- index cards work well...if it's not windy! A couple of gusts early on left me cussing (hence the little bits of tape holding the cards in place). However, when I started spraying the plastidip overspray firmed up the cards Smile

- spraying technique matters... I didn't pay enough attention to spraying evenly, especially the inner bits didn't get enough cover

- Although a couple of light coats helps, the later coats can be much thicker. I carried on with thinner coats and I think that's left my finish less smooth.

- Don't try and pick off anything that lands on the wheels during the process (pesky fly)...it just starts pulling up the whole covering...

- and...then don't try and cover up those bits with more spray (in isolation). I've been left with some uneven finish.

- Warming the cans in hot water for a few minutes before spraying seem to make the spray better

- Shake often! By the end I was shaking after every pause which seemed to help

- Be very vigilant about splotches. Stop immediately and spray the can upside down for a few seconds to clear the nozzle.

Looks good but I'm not a fan! At least you've used Plasti-dip which can be removed.
What are you planning on doing?? I'm interested as a fellow green owner, "Aintree" in my case. MY15

Good question! I'm just playing around with the look really. Like you say, plasti dip is great for experimentation and making changes for a while.

Going to spray the grill and side vents black as well.

I'm curious to see how the green and black will look. Aggressive me thinks Very Happy FL2 2011 SD4 XS in Galway Green

Thanks for the suggestion! You mean to make it easy to remove the overspray from the tyre wall? FL2 2011 SD4 XS in Galway Green

Whilst I like the dynamic grill (black) on the dark green (Aintree is quite dark) I think the silver grill looks better, personal choice though.

Thanks! Looks mean Twisted Evil

Part of my thinking is the metallic in my paint can make the green look quite a bit lighter in summer, so the darker features will complement that during the summer months.

I've not seen aintree green and galway green next to each in person, in photos they look very similar? So not sure if mine is bit lighter than yours? FL2 2011 SD4 XS in Galway Green

Yes, the overspray sits on the soap and not the tyre Thumbs Up

...and here they finally on my FL2! Looking mean Very Happy

I did tear the plasti dip several times around the wheel nuts. Think that was a combination of my newbieness at changing wheels and also poor spraying technique (is noticeable thinner on the edges of the wheel nut holes).

Going to use some thinner and respray to try and fix without having to do redo the whole lot...

You know I'm not liking it but not for any other reason other than its "Plasti-dip" I have a real adversion to it. Another member on here had their wheels "shadow chromed" which I think would look far better or even if you gloss blacked the rims. I saw a vehicle here the other day which also had plasti dip'd wheels which were looking rather shabby and it look so!
Is it a tempory thing?

I think I may even get the led headlights and tailights or as NUT'S will be selling his beast around MY18.5 and placing an order for MY19 delivery, I may even send him a PM nearer the time and ask if he would sell his freely private.
