I think I will stick with the 85% rule as I want to have a useable motor in 3 years time........ Tattoos - Why would you choose to look like the wall of a public toilet?

Road Toad i understand your concerns especially as i used to tow the outfit with a RRS but i can assure you the outfit is actually more stable than i thought and the Fl2 Sd4 a very capable tow car do the maths if the van is running at it`s max tow limit = 90% and the 85% rule is actually only a recommendation, but i do not wish to instigate a dispute between forum members merely showing if are sensible and drive within the limits of the outfit it is achievable within the legal safety limits . each to his own

I'm about to tow with my Freelander for the first time next week! The caravan is a Bessacarr Cameo 495, which weighs about 1290kg, and had been using a Rover 75 Connoisseur SE CDTi auto to tow it with. The Rover did very well but the Bessacarr is a little heavy for it. So I'm looking forward to seeing how the Freelander handles it.

I've been towing my Bessacarr Cameo SL535 for the last 9 years now, no problems with the freelander but use to have a Nissan x-trail which was a bit under powdered for the job so I had it remaped, helped but I had to come back to Land Rover MY13 HSE LUX Aintree Green
MY57 SE Stornoway Grey. Gone
Nissan X Trail
Discovery V8 LPG
Series II Land Rover

SGB and Hinchy, its going to be quite a first outing as well, from near Brighton to Corfe Castle for 4 nights, then on to Marazion for 10, and then back towards home but stopping in the New Forest for 4 nights. The Freelander is awesome I love it, and can't wait to tow Very Happy

My Outfit.

Quite a bit smaller than some of yours, but more than enough for me and the Missus. Tows like a dream.

Wrong ! I actually deal with vehicles everyday in my job and often see 5th or 6th gear literally burnt out or the gears gone blue from overheating ! and this is even on vehicles that dont tow.
hence the reason why I change gear to allow the heat transfer in the gear train set. Something that everyone should do !

On an auto there are temp sensors that will automatically change gear or lock the converter at various stages if the transmission oil is getting too hot to allow quicker cool down.
I am mechanically sympathetic. Jaguar x-type sport gone
Jaguar x-type 2.2d sport one of my best cars ever sadly gone
Freelander 2 GS auto 2008 most unreliable ever ! gladly gone
Freelander 2 GS manual 2013 only time will tell !

Thunderbolts Way (Australia) has a long steep section. My previous car was small & well maintained. Quite a few sections I could not get into third gear. By the time we got to the top the car was ok but the whole car was so hot. It was pushing it to its limit, would have stopped if it was any longer. Would have had no choice but to stop if the weather was hotter.
