Both the tail light and brake light have stopped working on one side. Both bulbs however seem ok, could it be a fuse?

There is only one fuse for brake lights so it would be both sides on the one fuse.

If one side is still working then fuse is not the problem. 2008 Freelander 2 HSE Si6 Black/Black - Hers

Not got an electrical diagram to hand but wont both lights have a shared earth

I'm a bit clueless when it comes to electrics, what would the implications be of having a common earth?

if that one earth is iffy you would loose both lamps, do you have access to a multi meter?

Having taken the lights off the car, instead of changing bulbs just unplug the lights from the car and plug them back in on the opposite side.

If the fault swaps sides it is a problem in the light unit. If the fault remains on the same side of the car it is a problem in the car.

Unlikely to be a dodgy earth as all five lights in a light cluster share a single earth connection. If the earth connection fails then all lights in the unit stop working.

Bulbs seem favourite - one may have been out for a while but with a second one more recently dead it just appears that both have failed together.
