Had this Freelander for a couple of months now and struggling to sort the dreaded HDC message when starting.
It starts on the button probably 70% of the time but the other 30 it displays the system check message and HDC off , all the trip/range figures zero and then i have to press start again.
I can see from the service records that last year it had a new starter, new start button and new steering wheel lock all done by Landrover. Fitted the additional earth strap , removed/cleaned checked all the other straps/leads myself.
The battery looked new and has obviously been changed but i cant see when in the service records, i have 3 different battery testers 1st gave it a pass 2nd gave it a pass but only just and the 3rd was right on the pass/fail line.
Yesterday i bit the bullet and replaced the battery with a new one but the fault is still there.
No fault codes logged other than a tow-bar one which i don't have fitted and no signs or records of one ever being fitted.
Any recommendations what to try next.

Forgot to add its a 2007 so no stop start

There's probably more people on here with similar experience with the earlier model than I but from what I've read can sometimes be the main plugs in the fuse box in passenger foot well which can be dislodged. Worth a try until someone else who has more/similar experience. Have a search of the forum there has been links for this. Good luck, I'm sure someone will come along and help you  MY15

Thanks Stuart i did consider that but Faults with those plugs seem to result in complete none start or total electrical failure. mine does start just sometimes needs a second press of the button,

there is an update to ecu for this..do a search ..
to stop this happening all i do is wait a few seconds before
pressing the start button after inserting fob

Thanks i'll check the software updates, i have access to some via my diagnostic kit.
have been thinking about other causes this afternoon and have a theory, when you press the start plug the Glow plugs kick in as well as the starter motor, could there be a fault with one or more of the plugs creating a massive current draw causing the problem. If the Freelander is the same as other diesels for example The TD5 second press of the button or turn of the key no glow plugs so no problem.
Anyone got any views??

2007 cars had this fault, in the early days of this freel2 forum it was basically the only reliability issuer ever discussed

take it to the dealers they will reset the software and cure your problems,

As CG says, a software update costing about half hours labour. It's a well know fault that the dealer should know of.
