If it's only on one side then CV joint on half shaft? Wheel bearing? is it road speed dependent . Does touching the brakes make a difference? We need a bit more info. 3 x FL1 2 manual + 1 auto

It happens at speeds above 20-30mph and it doesn't matter what sort of road I'm on the only thing that is obvious is that if I steer left I immediately get the noise and as soon as I steer back to the centre or right - no noise. I don't think touching the brakes makes a difference, but I'll check today. |

A worn cv joint will knock, click or rumble on full lock, but I dont think it would make a sound like your engine?? |

When you steer left, you are loading up the right side of the vehicle so I'd start by checking the right hand wheel bearings. |

No knocking, clincking noises just a sort of grinding noise but not metal on metal more like rubber against something. Braking makes no difference and can't hear the noise at 20mph or below. By the way what is the CV? |

I would go with a wheel bearing especially as it's direction dependent. I have had exactly this on a Renault Clio and on a Megane (both rear). However we recently had a rear wheel bearing on the Freelander2 and the sound was constant above about 20mph regardless of direction. Hence look at the front RHS. Incidentally I suppose you have checked that you haven't got something stuck or loose in the wheel arch?

Rubber on something?? Check the tyre isnt rubbing on the wheel arch, arch plastic liner or catching on the mudflap thats come out of position? as you turn then?

Thanks to all I will check out the CV. I think it is getting worse and is starting to travel past north. I have had a the brake pad and shoes replaced recently so I will get the garage to check this out. |

I had a similar thing happen on my 2011 FL2, when turning hard left I got a horrid grinding type noise, it didnt happen all the time but I called LR Assist out and they diagnosed an aux belt tensioner as the culprit - worth bearing in mind... Now - 2017 BMW X3 M Sport Carbon Black
