Two lessons I learnt from being caught out that way.

1. Decide how much you're prepared to pay and put in a bid for that amount.
2. Use one of the automated bidding sites to place your bid in the final moments so that people can't reconsider lesson 1.

And if someone is using Gixen or Auction Sniper you'll lose it again.

My winning bid last night was placed 6 seconds before the auction closed. Even if you had managed to place another bid before it closed then, because it hadn't reached my maximum bid, due to the way eBay works another automatic bid would have gone in and you'd still have lost it.
