I still think that you guys with the twin axles are pushing the limits of not just safety but also the capabilities of the FL power unit and transmission.
We tug a Lunar Clubman si (1295kg Mass in Running order) without a lot of adiditional payload/kit and I know that when tackling the A75 over the Central Massif towards the Med I would not have wanted another 300kgs added to the load! Tattoos - Why would you choose to look like the wall of a public toilet?

Well I'm quite happy that I wouldn't be towing to the med and I am 200kg below the fL2 limit so no need to worry Former Mod/Member, with the most post & Chicken George Arch nemesis

The road toad, are you sure you haven't got something wrong if you thought the climb over the Central Massiff was a struggle !
I have done the central Massiff ( South, North, East and West ) the N102 East too west is very steep for 25 miles and all zig zag, and the Alps into Switzerland and Italy numerous times with Twin Axles at 1600-1800 Kg and have never had an issue or a struggle.

I think I have a camera shot of my speedo and recounter whilst climbing up through the Alps to Mont Blanc and crushing at 60 at about 1600 rpm no issues at all ! With my auto, with twin axle loaded and four adults.

My Manual one I often put into 5th gear to allow 6th gear too cool down after long distances towing.

I have found if you drive too slowly the FR2 struggles but if you crack on and mostly on auto routes I will sit at 70+ which allows it to sit in top and crack on through the long up hill climbs on auto routes.
My concern would be you have something wrong !
I have towed my friends van that was 1300kg and it was like towing a tin trailer. The car just didn't even notice it.
The best thing about the FR2 is the tourque for towing. Jaguar x-type sport gone
Jaguar x-type 2.2d sport one of my best cars ever sadly gone
Freelander 2 GS auto 2008 most unreliable ever ! gladly gone
Freelander 2 GS manual 2013 only time will tell !
