Isn't it the fusion of off and on road capability, plus luxury that encapsulates the Land Rover brand? And the balance between these is set differently for the (now) three main sub-brands: defender, discovery and range rover. And I'm not sure offering "incredible luxury" is easy. Luxury is more than quality and price, it's a perception.
...how has that changed though? The DS is effectively a replacement for the FL2, so the stable hasn't really changed. And surely the 3 door evoque is a small SUV? FL2 2011 SD4 XS in Galway Green |

Range Rover Evoque is a small SUV, Discovery Sport is a compact SUV.

Price reduction is for the entry level 2.0 TD4 150 which is a 5 seater only, so doesn't really affect those of us that have just bought one. 21MY Defender 90 S 3.0 D200 |

Not sure if I understand what the suggested difference between a small SUV (Evoke) and Compact SUV (DS) amounts to, but fact is that there is no new LR product that one can drive away for less than £30 K - if we discount the Defender.

The price reduction takes into account the loss of the 2 seats in the boot on the entry level model.

We were out last night and we came up behind an Evoque, my wife commented what an ugly looking car before she realised what it was and that we had one once as a courtesy car. Then made a comment about the ridiculous back window and how she would never have one. Last time i heard comments like that was when the Ford Anglia came out. Ahhh, so by small SUV you mean small AND low cost! But how did the FL2 compete with those? At the end the basic FL2 SE model was £28k, which is now only about £2.5k beneath the entry level DS. That's close to how much the basic FL2 was at launch above the original freelander (£2k). Perhaps things aren't changing as much as it might seem at first glance? And based on comments from others here, we may yet see a more basic spec DS at a lower price. I very much doubt the lower price was a reaction to anything, I'd be amazed if that wasn't part of their strategy (although I have zero insight to automotive trade beyond my own experiences so take that with a pinch of salt) FL2 2011 SD4 XS in Galway Green |

I think you will find that the entry level DS is £32,395 with a great deal of difficulty getting any sort of discount. Conversely you could pick up a new FL2 for well under £25,000 last year. MY 09 GS manual in Lago Grey, Wood Co arm rest and side bumper strips - now sold.

You can't compare list price for one with a discounted price of another - it's not a like for like comparison. Especially when we're talking about the strategic makeup of Land Rover vehicles, and not a short term lens.

On the entry price aspect;its one thing comparing the latest listed FL2 price with the launch DS price, however for many buyers the relevant price comparison is how much they paid for a new FL2 & what it would now cost for an equivalent DS.

Understood, and that makes sense for an individual considering their next vehicle at this time. However, my challenge was more around a implied critique of LR strategy that the switch from FL2 to DS was LR leaving a product group (small SUV). Given your data on the early FL2 price, perhaps a conclusion is that there's been a gradual strategic shift happening over the life time of the FL2 away from the mid-price small/compact SUV segment? The DS is just another step along that road rather than a sudden signal? Although saying that...inflation adjusted, £23k in 2007 would be just shy of £30k in 2015 (£29732). And I'm guessing when introducing a new vehicle and setting price anchor points, you need to consider expected inflation over the anticipated life (so another 3 to 4 years worth of inflation before a significant revision?). So £30k to £32k seems more reasonable looking through that lens? FL2 2011 SD4 XS in Galway Green |
