Auto Express - Britain's Best Cars.

Hmmm, 61,000 owners reporting on their cars and yet again some grim reading for Landie fans.
Every year we hear that LR quality is supposed to be improving blah blah and yet....
JLR have no models in the top 10 for reliability.
JLR have no models in the top 10 for build quality.
Land Rover and Range Rover models in particular account for 5 of the 10 worst vehicles out of 200 models in the survey for running costs.

There is one small glimmer of light - in that the reliability and quality of the new Range Rover Sport Mk 2 is reportedly good.

All in all however this is yet another survey which indicates that the supposed "Premium" brand product placement is poops. (Must add that neither Mercs nor Beamers appear in top 10 for reliability or quality).
What "Premium brand" seems to entail is extreme running costs - high fuel bills, servicing charges and repair bills with patchy (at best) reliability.
Oh when will the company sort out primacy for engineers, not fashion and fluff consultants? Its not rocket science!

Shocked Oh Dear! Lol Laughing Just filled up my Freelander and was super happy with how little diesel I'm using for a pretty nippy "helftalump" vehicle. Only done 3700ish k's and I'm getting sub 10L/100km city driving with A/C running.
Mind you I'm told my first service will will $850ish - ouch! Big Cry so some definate improvement there, I'm thinking I'll need to hawk myself on the street corner soon!! Whistle MY15

It's a good job that we don't pay much attention to these sort of surveys and just enjoy driving our cars, hopefully without too much bother. Personally, I couldn't have bought a better car for the money that will do 40 mpg, go virtually anywhere and I can almost get all of my stuff in! Laughing v. Happy.

We have owned :
200TDi Disco
300TDI Disco
TD5 Disco
3x Mk1 Freelander
3x Mk2 Freelander

And I have no complaints about the vehicles - not 100% reliable nor the dealerships 100% either but all acceptable and no major grief for me at any time.

The only problem of note that Ive had with the Freelanders was with the first MK1 which needed a new IRD - sorted by dealership.
I wouldnt keep buying LRs if they were a constant headache. Jules

I'm amazed that that particular magazine is still allowed to be printed, given the garbage that it's so-called 'journalists' spout.

You only have to look at the lies purported over the 18 months running up to the launch of the DS, as well as the fabricated photographs to see what I mean. If anyone from that magazine is reading this, then good - you shower are an absolute joke, and the only reason your glossy rag sells any copies is because of certain gullible members of the public who believe everything you say. ( a bit like those who trust Balls and Millipede with the purse strings) Foraging near Gaydon....

That reminds me - I wish people would realise that the biggest expense in the ownership of a vehicle is the depreciation. Fuel consumption is relatively insignificant, yet its the first thing people use to compare vehicles. Its never mentioned by the manufacturers - I wonder why.

My BMW has lost £30K in 6 years - you can buy a hell of lot of fuel for that !
Also buying a new gearbox for £1500 is peanuts compared with the depreciation loss.

LR have very good resale values - in the top 5% I should think. Jules

You don't really live with depreciation every day though do you? You deal with fuel consumption on a roughly daily basis. You also live with reliability every day so even if these things aren't the real cost factors behind a vehicle they are still the most apparent.

In saying that, as long as I can afford to run and maintain my FL2, I will keep it.

Also saying people who buy certain mags are gullible is possibly a bit harsh. Not all of the car buying public are comfortable on forums or the net and so have to rely on something. FL2 TD4 GS 60 reg Facelift - so many issues

Now greatly regret selling the Outlander. MPG of the FL2 is atrocious and so are the fuel bills. Fun though 😎
Couldn’t afford the fuel bills so back to an older Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV. Significantly better than I remembered it to be…

Haha very true but coming from a FL1V6 to FL2 Diesel I can tell you there's a HUUUUUGE!!! difference Laughing having to run around with A/C on 80% of the year!
Not too concerned about depreciation at this stage as I intend on keeping unless LR comes out with something that doesn't imply I've joined the "Soccer Mum" brigade!!
Super Happy with the Freelander 2 and if something brakes then I'm sure the dealer will fix Thumbs Up

I agree that much of what is written in car mags is rubbish - and their fixations with super car performance and so on are far removed from the concerns of the motoring general public- both the gullible ones and not quite so gullible.
However, if one takes a broad view of all such surveys, Driver Power, Motoring Which, Reliabiliity Index etc - there are few reasons to be cheerful if you are a Landrover fan -particulary in areas which do matter to most owners - reliability, quality and running costs.

The question of reliable cars is never clear, very few cars actually leave you stranded, some of the so called reliability issues can be the report of a door card becoming loose, Perhaps it's the dealers, and the customers perception of them that cause the cars reliability to fall, the dealer says no trouble and a mechanic pops out has a quick look and replaces the clip and off you go ,no charge sir.madam, very reliable car. The other case is the service reception says, we'll book it in next week, you sit in the waiting room for 3 hours while the car sits there in full view, disappears for 10 minutes, the reception says 15 minutes sir/madam we are just valeting the car, bill for £60, unreliable car. The definition of reliable needs defining and the survey needs to define defects and niggles. my PC is slightly to the right of Genghis

Also very true. Personally I have had great service from my local LR dealer. My car has never left me stranded or forced me to rush to the dealers. Despite that it has had well over £3k worth of warranty work done in 10 months of ownership and I am a little afraid for when the warranty runs out in June. FL2 TD4 GS 60 reg Facelift - so many issues

I'd agree with the general sentiment here to take these studies with a pinch of salt.

It may or may not be credible - we can't tell because JD Power doesn't release details of their methodology. All studies have biases and flaws, but without exposing their methodology we can only speculate what they may be.

They don't even include margin of error, which is a showstopper for me. The numbers are mostly very close so with even a small margin of error we'd not be able to conclude much with any confidence. I can see why they don't reveal it though: it would undermine their ranking approach which appears their marketing centrepiece.

I find it unlikely that a manufacturer would move significantly year on year, a gradual improvement or decline perhaps, but a big jump with no obvious significant issue as the cause seems improbable. And of course in absolute rating they don't move much, it's just the ranking that makes it seem so.

Evidence that relativity is biasing results (i.e. expectations): the Seat Leon is ranked 7% higher for in-car tech than the Range Rover Sport, which only narrowly rates higher than the Dacia Logan...hmmm. Also, the Range Rover Sport MkI has better in car tech than the MkII. The in-car tech one is probably easiest to critique because it has a more objective quality to it (IMO). FL2 2011 SD4 XS in Galway Green

An executive from a magazine publisher once reminded me that the primary purpose of magazines (or virtually any regular publication) is not to inform or entertain but to deliver an audience for advertisers. When you look at it this way it answers a lot of questions. 3 x FL1 2 manual + 1 auto

My 3 Fl2s were bomb proof in terms of build quality and reliability. Can't fault them.

My DS so far, only had a squeak from the rear seat which has now been fixed, and the rest of it is rock solid, not a peep. I'm really impressed by the improvements made by LR with this car. I would be really surprised if it didn't get in the top 10 next year. 21MY Defender 90 S 3.0 D200
