Blanking EGR '62 Plate

Hi,

I have searched the site but cannot find a definitive answer to whether the EGR can be blanked on a post facelift car ('62 plate) without warnings/issues etc. It looks like pre facelifts can but the jury appears to still be out on the post facelift.

Can anybody advise further on this please.

Thanks
Mark

Can't be blanked without modifying the ECU firmware.
Otherwise the ECU will throw an error and light the MIL.
Pre MY11 are EDC16 ECUs, post MY11 are EDC17. Entirely different hardware and software.

So Alex, on a 2011my car there must be one or two pressure sensors on the EGR system. These sensors I guess would be showing a resistance in Ohms that the ECU looks for and interprets and in the case of an EGR blank would give a wrong value and trigger the fault code and dash light.
.
Could the sensor(s) be replaced by a resistor(s) to confuse the ECU in to believing all in fine?
.
Kind regards from Fred.

No pressure sensors for EGR. Those are for DPF.
The ECU is looking for the EGR position valve and the intake air flow values.
Just that the EDC17 based ECUs are REALLY looking for the MAF readings... Laughing

Hi Alex
If we ignore practical and look at theoretical....
.
Could we blank the EGR inlet at the throttle body and divert the EGR output pipe to a second exhaust pipe such that the EGR is still seeing a flow of gas?
.
Although I have a 2010 pre facelift I'm thinking of changing next year to a newer variant so having a way around the later EGR would be in mind.
.
Kind regards from Fred.

Can I ask why such a need to blank the EGR valve. As far as I'm aware it's only active on idle and low throttle. When the engine is asked to deliver power this valve is closed!?

A small amount of exhaust is still allowed during transitory periods. And the bad thing is that is full of black soot.

@Fred
Yes, of course, but let's think a little...
The cylinder intake "fluid" is composed from exhaust (unmetered, because there is no flow meter on the EGR path) and fresh (metered by the MAF). Keep in mind that the "union" of the two paths are way after the MAF.
If we blank the exhaust, the fresh flow will rise and the MAF will show to the ECU an abnormal increased flow for commanded/requested conditions and after a while MIL will be ON.

Ok! Again, this valve is supposed to be fully closed whenever the turbo(under load, required for boost) is working otherwise it has a retardation affect on the motor which has been mentioned more than once as a symptom of a malfunctioning EGR.
Again I can't really see why such a need to blank when this circuit should always be shut when engine performance is required.
Sorry! Not being difficult just trying to understand your need to block this off when all other literature points to these facts.
Particularly in light of how a Diesel engine works. Cool

Hi Alex,
Theoretical again....
.
So we need to blank the EGR at the EGR inlet from the exhaust and bleed in a supply of pressurised clean air at the EGR inlet taken from the boost pipe just before the AF meter?
.
There must be a way.....
.
Kind regards Fred .

The flow in (1) is the sum of (2) and (3). (1) = (2)+(3).
(2), exhaust, is not metered.
(3), intake, is metered by the MAF.
If you blank (2), so (2)=0 the flow through (3) will be higher, (1) = (3).
The ECU at one moment will open the EGR and will expect a certain, calculated flow at (3).
Instead, it will sense that the expected flow in (3) is higher than normal and will light the MIL.

@Stuartc

Search the web for "clogged egr valve" or "clogged diesel intake" and you'll see why....

Thxs Alex-P, i have, again.
Again I don't understand why you would do this, ie Performance gain or avoiding EGR problems?
Either way by blocking your EGR you will create the same scenario, a device which is designed to cool combustion chamber temperatures as well as being an emission device (yes good reason to get rid off)!
If you are to achieve fooling the ECU and indeed capping off the EGR system, how are you going to accommodate the very important functions of cooling when this is precisely the negative outcome of a blocked EGR - increased combustion temperature, oil overheated and turbo issues or worse still engine failure due to oil lubrication breakdown?

I don't know of any reported incidences with Land Rover vehicles but certain BMW engines were prone to the relatively flimsy 'swirl flaps' that formed part of the EGR valve disintegrating, dropping into the engine and causing a rather nasty repair bill. BMW refused to recognise a problem although later flaps were strengthened.

I don't know if this the motivation here, but if there was evidence of the same thing with the FL2 then I would blank mine, as I did with my BMW E39 5 series.
