2011 Freelander 2 TD4 GS Manual Santorini Black
Take off from standing start Diesel Lag

Still getting used to my FL2 diesel manual box compared to all my previous petrol engined cars... last one being a very spritely Focus 1.6 petrol.

Most annoying thing so far is a definite hesitancy to Take off from a standing start, especially at roundabouts when you see a gap but have to wait for the engine to pick up. I feel like I'm driving a tractor.. is this normal or do I have a tuning problem.
Car done 55000 miles and allegedly serviced by LR.

I'm so disappointed with the feel of this car in normal driving around town I doubt I will keep it more than a few months. However, on the motorway it cruises a dream at anything between 60-90. Sad

PS.. I see similar problems allied to the auto box pulling away in 2nd .. but I'm not going to hold the thing on the clutch at 2000 revs just to outdo the little ol lady in a Corsa next to me. Give me a petrol engine anytime if this is the diesel norm.

Do a search on here for judder and hesitation. Think there is a known issue with this. FL2 TD4 GS 60 reg Facelift - so many issues
2019 DS. Terribly unreliable.
Sold DS for a 2021 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV. Fingers crossed....
Sold Outlander for a 2014 SD4 SE Tech because I’m mental
Now greatly regret selling the Outlander. MPG of the FL2 is atrocious and so are the fuel bills. Fun though 😎
Couldn’t afford the fuel bills so back to an older Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV. Significantly better than I remembered it to be…

Do bear in mind this isn't a sports car, it is a 2.5 tonne car. Still has plenty of welly though. Certainly took me a while to get used to but now I know my car I can pelt away from a standstill. FL2 TD4 GS 60 reg Facelift - so many issues

Mine, albeit with the 160 engine, takes off very nicely from a standing start (for a heavy 4x4 - as said it's not a sports car).

Ok thanks, and I do appreciate this is a 'relatively' heavy car. But you then don't put a 1.2 litre engine in a Mondeo for the same obvious reason.

I've had enough under powered cars in my time to know when there's a problem, either mechanical or engine under specified for the weight of car. I mainly drive alone so the thought of carrying 5 adults like i'm in a clapped out Skoda is not what I consider joyful motoring.

I've seen another post where the turbo was at fault , so would appreciate any experiences others have had. But I fear the worst and I've made a mistake. Incidentally, my previous petrol Rav 4 had no such issues, apart from appalling mpg... so that had to go too.

The FL2 is by no means underpowered - 150/160 bhp plus 400 nm of torque put it well above most of it's 'rivals' (quoted rivals because it doesn't really have any!), so if it's as bad as you imply you have a problem.

Start by checking the turbo pipework, the fuel filter and the air filter. Then get any error codes read. Oh, and check the handbrake isn't binding (rear wheels not getting hot) as that can be a problem too.

Thanks again.. this is my point. Once on the move no problem. Its a def lag in response to the throttle, which I consider dangerous, especially if I was to try and pull into fast moving traffic or find myself broadside to an Albanian lorry driver on any roundabout in Dover.

So I would appreciate advice from anyone who cured a similar problem.

Stick it in Sand TR mode and try it and see if theres any difference, that's what I do when there's not much of a gap to get out in and then quickly turn it back to default once going.

That sounds good .. I'll try that. Thumbs Up

I'm just Googling and reading about Turbo Lag .. so maybe I'm just suffering the normal downside of such a thing, the only cure seeming to be stand with the clutch in at 3000 revs and then drop the clutch on Amber. Laughing

seems Audi are introducing electric Turbos to combat this effect. Won't help me tho so I will be looking to change back to petrol PDQ.

NOW you've opened a can of worms..

So do the other driving modes alter the way the engine works rather than what I assumed was just traction.????
maybe I should try them all .. just like a Top Gear test with a caravan on tow. Whistle

The TR modes do not alter the way the engine works - all they do is alter the responsiveness of the drive-by-wire accelerator. You don't get any more power/torque in sand mode, you just get it with a smaller pedal movement. The other modes work the other way - they reduce pedal sensitivity. So you'll get no more from sand mode than you will from normal mode with your foot to the floor, it just feels more responsive.

Very Interesting.. certainly worth a try.

So can it be left in sand mode or does this affect normal driving.? I got the FL mainly because I live on a side road with a steep hill and get marooned in any normal car during snow and ice.

I never intended to go beach surfing or down cart tracks, but to alter the different modes.. should you stop and select before moving on or can you adjust on the go. Question
