Automatic shifting poorly and blowing black smoke

Hi all,
This is a problem and fix report in case similar symptoms occur for you. Recently my 2007 FL2 developed problems with the automatic transmission shifting poorly in low gears and blowing large clouds of black exhaust on acceleration. The workshop replaced the throttle body shutter valve and all was good again.

Hmmm. When they fail, they fail in the open position. I ran mine for a few weeks like that with no performance problems. So have many others on here. Did they do/charge for any incidental work at the same time by any chance?

Mine failed recently too... It's failure was only evident on the 'lumpy' engine shutdown. Oh, that and the accompanying prolonged and embarrassingly noisy clattering of the throttle body trying to close itself. Embarassed

The actual drive was completely unaffected and no black smoke either.

We had one fail where it had chewed some of the gears up but seemed to be still partly working such that you could get moving but coming up to a junction it would cut out. We managed to limp home and then to the local indie to get it sorted. A local guy who worked for LR later said that the best thing to do would be to remove the connector, on the throttle body, you will get an engine management light on but it would be more driveable to get you home. 3 x FL1 2 manual + 1 auto

No dash light error message but 4 error codes from the OBD. I have no doubt the incidentals list was padded out - they seem to throw in a detail (clean) whenever the price gets above a certain amount. The smoke was embarrassing like James Bond escapes the baddie type screen. Happy to have it fixed will do my own servicing for a bit to stay in buget.
