Home > Technical > Vibration "surges" at speed. Haldex! |

I am getting surges of vibration or shuddering felt through the car body at speeds of 60-70 mph on straight smooth roads. Not really noticeable at lower speeds. The surges occur every half mile or so and feel like going over rumble strips or maybe axle wind-up. Other times it feels smooth. I have 2 x Brand new Scorpion Zeros (each @ 8mm) fitted to the front and 2 x Accelera Iotas (each @ 6.5mm) fitted to the back. The new tyres on the front were fitted as the first attempt to fix the problem. (previous front tyres were 6mm and 4mm). Suspecting a Haldex fault I selected GGS for a few miles but there was no change apart from reduced throttle response.

Since the initial post I have spoken to Adam Roberts at Duckworths. He identified fuse FB6 in the rear fusebox. I pulled it and did a test drive - with "Traction Control Fault" flagged on start up and permanent flashing amber warning light. A drive down the A46 dual carriageway was as smooth as silk. I pulled in to a layby and refitted the fuse. Within half a mile the fault was back. Haldex fault! Apparently the Haldex self tests at regular intervals whilst driving. With mine it looks like it is being a bit over zealous and giving me vibes every half mile (or about 30 seconds).

Update: Now fixed! After several checks, the Haldex software was updated to that called for after a diff pinion repair. Diff was fine apparently. Drives smoothly now. Thank you Adam Roberts at Duckworths! All work paid for by LR extended warranty 10MY (Sept 09) TD4 HSE Auto in Stornoway Grey (Now Gone)

Mick P, the key thing on the fault I had was the regular vibrations every half mile/30 secs or so at about 60 mph on a straight road. On country roads with bends and slower speeds it disappeared. It clearly was amplifying the differences in rotations between the 8mm tread depth front tyres and the 6.5 mm rear tyres, but only at speed in a straight line. I was lucky as I had a spare winter set of 17's which were all the same wear rate. When they were fitted, the fault disappeared, proving it was the difference between front and rear tyres on the 18's showing the problem.

Dunkly, many thanks for the in depth info, much appreciated. Interesting about tyre sizes. I knew this was an important consideration on FL1 but thought it irradicated on FL2. Will DEFO check it out.

Mick, thanks for getting back. Re tyre size issues - you are right, in general it has been eradicated on the FL2. It was just that on mine the Haldex ECU self test (apparently about every 30 secs) was making the Haldex clutches "grab" for a fraction too long which gave the vibration because the F to R tyre rotations were slightly different. Once the software was sorted the problem disappeared.

Can I butt in on this one? Seen loads of posts about driving slowly in a circle and you'll "know" there's a problem - I have no idea what Id be looking for. Should you let the car pull itself in 1st, 2nd, gas/no gas? What symptoms would a problem exibit?

I have never experienced the fault that is supposed to be revealed by the full-lock test. I assume the rear axle tyres will scrub as they fight for position with what would be a locked-up differential. Try it in various TR settings. I understand the Haldex (which is essentially a front to rear diff) should be engaged when GGS, M&R or Sand is selected. If I am wrong, I am sure someone with better knowledge will be along shortly!

I'm assuming that this is to test whether the haldex is acting as a diff or has locked up. If it's locked up, you ought to get transmission "wind-up" and the steering will become stiff as the wheels rotate at different speeds or travel different distances - you might even get a judder as the tyres scuff.
