I've taken the car into Williams in Manchester having experienced creaking from the front offside suspension area. This was raised last year, unfortunately they took my wife for a bit of a mug and said they had lubed everything up and all is well. This time I made sure I was the one to take it in and insist they look at bushes, ball joints and A frame to make sure they diagnose the cause (under warranty).

This morning I went back in to collect the car and was told that the bushes need replacing. I would be happy with this if the car wasn't 20 months old with less than 30K miles on the clock and never been taken anywhere near anything other than tarmac. I've taken a few cars/motorbikes apart in my time although I'm by no means an expert mechanic, but I am starting to think that Williams are using inexperienced mechanics, or maybe even apprentices who can't find the issue quickly thus point towards the easiest/cheapest method to "see if it fixes it".

This is definitely a creak, like an old matress and not a knock. I can't pinpoint the exact location as it happens when driving over speedbumps etc. Anybody had similar issues and can point me in the right direction?

Also, I had the Discovery Sport as a courtesy car while ours was in. Verdict: Gorgrous interior (much superior to the freelander) but a rubbish driving position and can't see myself ever wanting to buy a 4x4 that feels like you're driving a car.

I had the same creaking and the bushes replaced under warranty - so far so good but you are right, it shouldnt happen to a car with 20k miles ( which mine had ) and is only 2 yrs old.

Lol, it's the interior that I had the biggest dissapointment! What model year are you comparing it to if I may ask? I have a MY15.

We have a MY13 Freelander. The interior of ours is good, leather, heated seats, nav etc but the DS felt more premium. But that driving position really grated on me.

Aah Ok, I think its because when your sitting in FL2 your arm sits on the "pleather" part of the door trim whereas in the DS the door card part is hard plastic. I also disliked the centre console with the shinny cheap black plastic. It's really an "ordinary" dash design. I still think the Freelander 2's interior is a nicer place to be and yes I think this is partly due to the high seating position.

I would place a 99% bet that the creak is coming from the vertical link between the front strut and the anti roll bar.

Peer under the front wheelarch, you see the coil spring and it's lower pressed support disc which is part of the strut. Just under the support disc you will see a nut facing you.

Put your hand behind the nut and you will feel a ball joint hidden behind with a vertical member going down to the roll bar where there is a second ball joint.

On these vertical links the ball joints rubbers fail, water gets in and destroys the joint thro rusting hence squeaking.

This is a common problem on today's cars it's not limited to Freelanders.

Cost �15 - 25 easy fitting by a competent home mechanic.
