I would place a 99% bet that the creak is coming from the vertical link between the front strut and the anti roll bar.
.
Peer under the front wheelarch, you see the coil spring and it's lower pressed support disc which is part of the strut. Just under the support disc you will see a nut facing you.
.
Put your hand behind the nut and you will feel a ball joint hidden behind with a vertical member going down to the roll bar where there is a second ball joint.
.
On these vertical links the ball joints rubbers fail, water gets in and destroys the joint thro rusting hence squeaking.
.
This is a common problem on today's cars it's not limited to Freelanders.

Cost �15 - 25 easy fitting by a competent home mechanic.
