United Kingdom 2007 Freelander 2 TD4 HSE Auto Stornoway Grey

Maybe I have confused people, The ray itself will never wear out,
The laser is still 007 Evil villains weapon of choice.

The Laser can wear out because it is simply made of a semiconductor (a LASER diode, LASER-ED). Optically the glass (or lens) is unlikely to wear out.

But, in a DVD optical system, the lens is placed on a spring-damper system for focusing purpose. To control its focusing, the lens can move in several directions controlled by electro-mechanical system (it uses magnetic force actually to control the movement of the lens).

So it is likely the whole optical system can be easily damaged if a certain condition applied...such as: unstable voltage, mechanical shock, or a bad disk that cause's the lens to change its focus rapidly attempting to read and re-read the corrupted data.

United Kingdom 2007 Freelander 2 TD4 HSE Manual Tambora Flame

Joe had a vaild point but i think there are other factors like disk in use and its quality / how its made as well as the mechanics tolances.

The same could be said for an oem disk which needs cleaning though.

In theory he is right.

As a wider issue... The problem is that car oems seem to like putting their own systems in which bring many ptoblems as a lot of them are just slow and not very good to keep the cost down. In todays iphone world this is not acceptable for consumers.

There are slow moves to fix this ( carplay / android auto etc) in much the same way that the tv oems are letting software companies provide the eco system and experience.... Only when this takes off will the problem of expensive out of date disks and systems be resolved which lets face it is one of the main reasons for the 'backup' services.
