Smash an old socket over it. That usually does the trick. If you can heat the socket first, that helps - it expands the socket and as it cools, it contracts and grips more. Done it plenty of times. Use a 12 sided socket, not a 6 though.

Thanks all

Sadly the bevel does rotate but I liked the idea (Im just about capable of smashing a socket with a hammer!) and will put that one away for the future ref.

I don't own a MIG but I know a man that does.

After easter Im Off to the DIY store to get a mould

In the meantime Ive been spotted locally peering at Freelander and Evoque wheels looking for a match!!

I don't know if this will help but my locking key says grey on the bag suggesting that the keys might be specific to car colour. If you can find someone with the same colour/age they may have one.

To add to my previous thoughts whilst i still reccomend the casting of a metal replica key as being safest as non destructive there is another thought.
.
If you bought a Cobalt (have I the right name) drill you could drill a central hole in the (hardened)steel then buy an 'easy out' tap ( only an expensive quality maker as cheap ones are useless), and remove the nuts that way.

Re the photos, I got those off the internet as part of my research.

Re the colour coding, I have seen a different code colour to the colour of the car at the dealers. The guy there reckons there are so many there is so master set.


Pretty sure the dealer has my key as they removed the wheels for the service. They also forgot to put the service booklet back in the car and I had to return to collect it!! which doesn't prove anything but......I have emailed them too.

Thinking I might email McGard with my image to see if they can help match it up or buy the kit to remove them, if the dealer doesn't come thru.

Hi Pablo, just a thought, as you suggest the dealer had the wheels off , have you done a thorough check of the car to include in the spare wheel well and under the front seats? I seem to remember that the carpet under the two front seats had a hidden cavity.

Thanks for the tip Fred. I had checked but Ive just been out again to check once more. There is no hidden cavity under my seats only a CD reader for the sat nav and the heating vents. Still found some of the kids lego, so it was not a waste of time!

Moles home, thanks for the link. Useful because thd guy in the video says you get the new key free and the removal kit too but it must be returned. Good to know McGard stand by their product.

I'm surprised at what your dealer said. Dealers have said to me in the past that they couldn't find the key (they didn't look in the obvious place - under the spare wheel in MY07 models) but that it didn't matter as they had a universal tool for them. Seems very odd that a LR dealer would not have such a tool. Ex AA Series III LWB Safari - Gone
300TDi Disco (bought new - terrible car) sent back after 18 months
Freelander 1 Estate - leased, given back at end of lease
200TDi Disco (bought from a mate with 100,000 on the clock) - Gone
Disco 2 TD5 - sold and exported to France
FR2 TD4 GS - Gone
FR2 SD4 HSE - Now changed for a DS
New model ex-demo Evoque S 180 in white
Unable to order a new DS, so gave up. Now have a Volvo S90 Recharge.
