Nasty Vibration- any ideas?

Hi,
My apologies at being new to this, but I have been searching the tech forum for an answer to an issue my freelander 2 has developed in the last week.
Whilst driving I am getting a loud vibration or resonance at particular speeds, you can feel the vibration through the accelerator pedal, it seems to become more pronounced when going round a right hand bend.
It's difficult to pin point but it seems to be coming from the drivers side front wheel.

I removed the wheel to look for anything obvious, but found nothing. Whilst putting the wheel back on I noticed it was easy to spin it despite the other 3 wheels being on the floor, should I be able to do this?

Any help or advice greatly appreciated as I am trading the car in for a new discovery in 8 weeks, so really want to keep the costs down..... Shocked

spinning the wheel is normal if it's not in gear, wheel bearings may produce the vibration if you say it's worse at certain wheel angles...

do you get any vibration through the steering wheel?

Only very slight through the steering wheel, through the pedals and audible is worse, seems to happen around the 50-60 mph bracket.
Just trying to nurse it through to trade in, but don't want to risk breaking it completely if you know what I mean..
Thanks for the quick reply though. Smile

I would check the front drive shafts. It's easy to do if you jack the wheel off the ground you might find that there is some play in one of the joints (try both ends of each shaft) you might even find that the rubber gaiter is loose and has let water in. Depending upon where the car has stopped you might even feel it without jacking the car up.

Thanks for that I will check them out today, if there is any play in the shafts does this mean replacement joints or drive shafts. Or if the gaitor and water ingress is it an easy fix?

I don't think that you can get the replacement "spiders" in the joints and that you have to buy the complete Land Rover shaft. Once out the joint looks to me to be replaceable but where to get the parts? If water has got in and caused damage then it's too late although you could just fill it up with Moly grease, seal it up and hope for the best. It's not likely to fail for a long time, the problem is that the joint being slightly loose can make the shaft off centre and hence the vibration. Of course this might not be your problem but it sounds like what I had. 3 x FL1 2 manual + 1 auto

This vibration, if you stop the car for a few minutes, does it return immediately after driving again? Or does it take a few minutes before it happens again? Another member of the failed FL2 clutch/DMF club, twice.

The cv joint problem is often not wear on the spider but a hollow in the pod where the bearing slides with suspension and cornering movements. All FL2's (3) Gone

In my case I took the spider out and found that I could pull the bearings off the tripod fairly easily by hand. All three were a loose fit and with a micrometer there was ovality of about 20 thou on the tripod legs (if that's the term you use). It's not a lot of wear but enough to cause a problem as the spider rattles about and presumably damages the hollow that it all sits in.
