Right, looking for some opinions here.

I bought a facelift (very late 2010 reg) TD4 GS with 29000 miles on the clock from an LR dealer in Glasgow in June 2014.

I have done 7000 miles since owning (none off road sadly) and had it serviced at the correct time.

In that time, the following issues have arisen (as discussed on a few other threads).

Paint on tailgate issue from handle. Required respray.
Faulty fuel gauge which dropped to zero on the motorway with my kids which scared the out of me
Questionable gearbox/clutch which hasn't really been addressed
Fogged rear light cluster
Faulty transfer box

Now, all of these issues have or will be resolved under the extended warranty, but, as this ends in June this year, I am unsure what to do. I am about to move house and will be using every last bit of spare cash so will have nothing in savings for a while. As the car seems to have developed a new and potentially costly fault (transfer box £2200 all in after vat and labour) I cannot afford for it to continue like this.

I know all cars can have issues, but this is a bit silly. Very low miles and only 4 years old. It shouldn't be failing like this.

So would you keep it or get shot of it? I love it, but not if it keeps going like this. FL2 TD4 GS 60 reg Facelift - so many issues

I went through a similar thought process at the beginning of the year, and kept mine for now.

In my opinion I wouldn't include the light cluster and the paint issue on that list, so for me it is a worry about the transfer box. more than anything else - you've had the others fixed so they shouldn't be appearing again. Even though the expense seems a lot, you'll lose far more than that in changing the car again so my vote would be hold on to it. But it does depend what you'd change to - if you went to a bluemotion golf with 0 tax and cheap as chips economy but a car you'd be happy with then you'd recoup some of the cost. But if you change up to something else that costs more then in the short term it's not helped, even though it might prove to be more reliable. The maintenance costs pale in comparison with the depreciation of a new car anyway, which is why I've kept it despite diff issues, throttle body issues, 4 tyres, discs and pads all round in the last 6 months!

Maybe use it through the move and then get rid?

Thanks for that. I would agree about the light and paint thing, but they were annoyances that left me without a car.

Although I have no idea of real sale prices, Auto trader suggested £14k for private sale. I would then buy something else for that amount. So yes Id lose money as I paid £17k for the car. But the transfer box alone almost cost the difference.

I suppose that provided the replacement car is more reliable then the peace of mind would be worth it. To me that means a newer car, and therefore smaller.

You could always borrow a few k on a 0% card or something and get a reasonably new octavia estate - that would be my path anyway...

Borrowing more ain't an option. But yes, if I were to go down that route, a smaller more efficient car would be the choice as we are moving from mildly rural Stirling to Edinburgh.

Keep it. If you get any trouble with the transfer box, these will normally sort it for you.

I would keep it then - at least you know what the history of it is now, anything else you get is also a risk.

What about extending the warranty by another year? Despite being only 11 months into a 2 year extended warranty I received an invitation to extend for another year (clerical error they said) the price quoted is (per year)

ext warranty £640 or £790 with assistance

I only get insurance if it is compulsory or if I couldn't afford the consequences of not having it. If, due to your house move, you would be strapped for cash in the event of a £2200 repair bill, I'd seriously consider the extended warranty option. Oh, and the matches WERE a joke!

You don't need matches, they catch fire by themselves, but that saves you money on the matches.

I would consider the paint issue on the boot in your decision, my 60 plate boot was repainted 4 or 5 times, my current my14 is going off to have the boot repainted for a second time this Easter. That's around 7 weeks off the road for a paint issue.

But if I were you, keep the car, don't waste money changing vehicles, buy an extended warranty every year. I would not own a Land Rover without a warranty mainly for peace of mind. All cars go wrong but the fl2 dates well and is nice to own and use for years.
