Turbo Failure?

Sometimes, when the the car is warm and under load there is a strange sound from under the bonnet.

It sounds like a turbine spooling up and happens between 2000 and 2500 revs. When it happens as I accelerate it also happens on the overrun. The noise is load enough to cause comment from a non mechanical friend, "What the hell is that, a jet engine?"

If I dribble around keeping the revs down it does not happen: if I gently go through the rev range it normally doesn't happen, but sharp acceleration from a junction will usually promote it.

There is no smoke from the exhaust although we do seem a bit down on power.

A year ago (again after the MOT) the exact same noise was the precursor to a turbo pipe blowing off. Pipe replaced noise gone for 11 months

My local non LR garage has had a look and are confident that the turbo is failing. At £780.00 for a replacement turbo that is an expensive look. Next stop a second opinion from an independent LR medic.

An internet search for FL2 turbo failing returns sparse results.

Any thoughts? 2007 TD4 SE Manual Santrini Black

Hi,

I am new to the FL2 TD4 engine but what you describe does sound like an intercooler hose failing. They sometimes get a small split or, on my FL1, push off the connection which is hard to spot.

When the hose pushed off the connection on my FL1, I had the symptoms you describe and it did not smoke. Also, if it was the turbo making the noise you describe, I would expect lots of smoke!

Hope you get it sorted cheaply!
