I had half an hour to kill at the main dealers whilst they were checking out an oil leak which has now turned into three oil leaks -rear main crankshaft seal, IRD low level repair and first and second sump seal. 11 hours of labour and £2k bill! What is it with Land Rovers and oil seals-I haven't had one yet that doesn't eventually leak!!!! I have a non LR warranty that came with the car but, although it's only done 32K miles, it's 8 years old so I am not holding out much hope.

Anyway, whilst I was contemplating whether to let Land Rover do it or go down the independent route I took a walk around the dealers car park.





Ground clearance looks about the same from a distance but when you look closely the suspension sits much lower on the DS




I regularly drive along heavily rutted tracks-I can't help but think there is a fair chance you run the risk of grounding in a DS.




It looks tiny next to a RR Sport




The pedestrian air bag is the only feature I really don't like-I can't understand why it wasn't painted body colour.




They had a few colours-this was the pick of the bunch IMO

I had the rear diff repair done a couple of weeks ago and it looks as if it's leaking oil already. Perhaps the ghost of British Leyland still haunts the UK car factories. 3 x FL1 2 manual + 1 auto

It's 8 cm longer than an Evoque/Freelander2 and slightly lower and narrower.
Ground clearance at the front is 212mm as compared to a Freelander 2's 210mm. Ground clearance at the rear is 212mm as opposed to the Freelander 2's 265mm (all figures are approximate)

Many thanks for that feedback Dorset-it has helped me make my mind up about the main dealers doing the work. I think they will be more likely to rectify a second failure.

The DS is smaller looking than the FL2 but feels spacious inside, particularly for rear passengers. The fit and finish is good IMO and I can totally understand why some people are trading in their FL2's for one. I think I would buy a base spec Evoque though, considerably cheaper, just as classy looking and will hold its' value just as well. For now I still prefer the retro FL2

The oil leak from the rear main seal can trickle it's way to the sump. It happened on mine and the sump seal was fine.
If you've a manual (I cant tell from your profile) get the CSC replaced while the gearbox is off. Another member of the failed FL2 clutch/DMF club, twice.

Hi Pegleg-many thanks for taking the time to offer advice.

It is a manual gearbox. A little odd this. I had it serviced three weeks ago-no leaks other than one small "weap" noted on the rear main crankshaft seal. Now I apparently have three leaks which require immediate attention. I always thought seals deteriorated over months rather than a few weeks. They have recommended changing the end cap seals at the same time. I'm unsure what these are. Could you possibly clarify what the "csc" is? Would you suggest any other preventative maintenance parts whilst they have it apart? The clutch seems ok and I haven't had any obvious slipping.

Looking underbonnet from the front; there is a large plastic pipe at the rear of the engine. There is a joint on this pipe on the left hand side. Run your finger underneath this joint and check for oil. It's crankcase breather oil and this too can manifest itself around the oil separator and sump. Another member of the failed FL2 clutch/DMF club, twice.
