Fortunately the pump kept stopping and I only put in 4 litres before the awful truth dawned.

So the pump stopping was it trying to tell you the misfuel device was working! Seems like it doesn't totally block off the pipe though if you still managed to pump some in.

Perhaps you need one of those covers where you need to actually insert a diesel nozzle in to it to open?

I think it triggered the Misfuel Device, it doesn't stop you adding petrol, but makes it a very slow process, normally you can just insert the Nozzle and fully press, no restrictions till its full.
With four litres in a near empty tank, I'd have added a litre or two of 2SO and topped up with Diesel, after resetting the Misfuel Device of course. p****d off with a Digital Keyboard Warrior

yeah thanks guys. maybe I'll pop in to my local LR dealer and see just what is the situation with these devices and get the official opinion on whether I could have driven.

I know.. its Comic Relief day. Who fancies filling with petrol and see who gets the furthest. Smile

I'd keep quiet about it, it has been said the the LR line is to replace the Pump, Fuel Lines, Injectors, about £5k, any warranty you have will be void on the Fuel/engine unless you have the parts replaced, your call though. p****d off with a Digital Keyboard Warrior

Don't think of mentioning it to the dealer, it may come back and bite you as their stance is to replace everything at great cost, just put it down as an experience you don't want repeated. Thumbs Up

The diesel misfuel system fitted to the Freelander does not stop you adding the wrong fuel but once the yellow flap inside the fuel filler is deployed it will make the fuel filler nozzle think the tank is full and keep cutting off the fuel flow. The yellow device that lives in the boot under the floor mat is designed to reset the yellow flap if it has been deployed for any reason.

It sounds like the system worked as it is designed to work.

Take it to the dealer, you might want to view the video in the link, it wasn't petrol in it, but yours would expect would be treated the same..

I played about with mine and thought the nozzle was restricted to how far the it would go into the filler, only played with it when I first bought the car so could be wrong, you can also see a restriction in the filler. I don't think it's designed for those with thumbs up their bums. Laughing my PC is slightly to the right of Genghis
