Mysterious Shiver!

Hi guys, I hope you can help

I have a MY10 manual that has just done 51K, had a full service last week and 2 new tyres on the rear the week before that.

It maybe that I only notice this phenomenon because I have finally got rid of the very noisy wranglers, but since having the tyres changed, I have noticed that on a smooth straight road at a constant speed, say set the cruise to 50, after about a minute or so, I feel a shiver go through the car. it only lasts less than a second but it is repeated every couple of minutes.

At first I thought it might be water in the fuel as it was near a service, but the service was done last week & the fuel filter changed so it can't be that.

It is so difficult to explain, I thought it was the engine somehow misfiring, but today, I experienced it going down hill on overrun so it now seems it could be a transmission shiver.

I have never noticed it before so that points to the new tyres, they are Pirelli Scorpion Verde, but they were balanced and everything when fitted so I am at a loss.

I do have the TyrePal sensors fitted, but I would not expect them to have any effect as they haven't in the past. I have tried it at different speeds and it still happens every couple of minutes or so. If driving a normal A road round bends etc it is not noticeable, but on a smooth straight run it shows up. It is just a slight shiver, not a shudder or anything really noticeable, passengers don't appear to notice it.

I am not overly worried, but I would like to find the cause if I can.

Thanks for reading  MY2014 SD4 XS

thanks PAB

The description does seem to be the sort of thing I am getting.

I will get it in to have the updates checked as it did have the rear dif bearing repair done, but that was over a year ago.

Could it cause any damage if left to it's own devices?  MY2014 SD4 XS

I doubt that it would cause harm if left, but usual disclaimers apply!

I suspect you're only feeling it now because replacing 2 tyres has put the two axles slightly out of balance - the axle with the 2 new tyres will have a slightly larger rolling radius than the other. When the Haldex locks during its self-test you get a bit of transmission wind-up.

Fabulous

As ever, this site is a mine of valuable information.

Sorry my obviously inept search did not find it when I searched, but it does need you to use the same term, i.e. shiver - shudder!!

Thanks for all your help PAB.  MY2014 SD4 XS

I remembered the original thread so I knew what to search for! 'Self test' was the magic word(s), and you couldn't know to look for that.

Service?
Have they adjusted the handbrake? The shoes could be rubbing on the drum.
Check that the rear wheels aren't getting warm Thumbs Up Another member of the failed FL2 clutch/DMF club, twice.

Thanks Pegleg, but it was there before the service so I don't think this is likely to be the cause.

Thanks for the comment though.  MY2014 SD4 XS
