Battery Removal

Hi everyone,

I wanted to ask a question which is probably silly... but hey ho, here goes....

I have recently bought a 2007 FL2 and the battery seems below par as it was standing for some time at the forecourt. Before looking to get the battery replaced I would like to give it a charge using a battery conditioning charger and in order for these to work well the battery should be removed/disconnected from the vehicle. Are there any issues with removing the battery? Will the car 'forget' anything Smile

Thanks
Rhys

Should be fine just to remove it - you may have settings to change re global locking / windows but they're not a problem, all the answers are here already Smile

Welcome Thumbs Up

Just a thought and it might not be the same on an FL2, but on an FL1 you were warned to remove the key from the car when you refitted the battery as all the doors would lock. I learned this the hard way and luckily the spare key was to hand.

1. Apply parking brake or
alternatively, chock wheels
2. Switch off ignition and
remove the remote control.
3. Wait 2 minutes for engine
management system to 'power
down'
4. Open the hood
5. Disconnect battery - GROUND
lead first

THEN

1. Ensure that all electrical loads are switched OFF
2. Connect battery leads - GROUND lead last
3. Switch on ignition
4. Reset radio station preset buttons.
5. Reset clock
6. Reset electric window one-touch facility. Power window up to hard stop, release
switch, reapply and hold for 1 second (relay in door will click). Lower window to stop,
reapply and hold for one second. One touch should now work

Thanks everyone for your responses. Seems like it may not have been such a silly question then Smile Smile

No sunroof on mine so that's one less thing to worry about.

IMO you won't damage the vehicle by charging the battery in situ, but I believe there's a lot of people who wouldn't want to do that. There may be residual load on the battery in the car and so take longer to charge but it would be ok I think.

Saying that there's a lot on here who have decided to just replace the batts after a few years - will be doing that for my 58 this year, and I think i've had good use out of the battery, 8 years is a fair life.

Additionally if you're finding a lot of problems with slow starts and HDC faults being thrown up, search on here for starter motor earth mod, which is well documented, and for a tenner you might be able to get away with the battery for a while Thumbs Up

Thanks both.

The reason I suggested removing the battery is the conditioning charger provides different levels of battery recovery based on whether it is connected to the vehicle:

This is taken from the charger's manual:

The charger’s TURBO recovery mode cannot engage if it senses that the battery is still connected to a vehicle wiring circuit
which effectively offers a lower electrical resistance than the battery on its own. However, if the deep-discharged battery is not
removed for recovery, neither battery nor vehicle electronics will be damaged.

To give the best chance of recovery I was going to remove the battery.

I read this with great interest - I was recently having a "Transmission Fault" error at strange times and other posts seemed to suggest the battery may be at fault. Therefore I was thinking of doing this mod. I notice from the other thread that the official LR fix (on newer models) is to add the strap to the body of the vehicle.

most have chosen to fit to the starter motor bolt to alleviate this.

Having said that, maybe the battery is just knackered lol

When LRA changed my battery, the Fob was stuck in the Dock, it wasn't till the new battery was fitted that there was enough power to release the Fob.
He also plugged in his Laptop, had to log the fact that it had Heated Seats is one thing I remember. p****d off with a Digital Keyboard Warrior

When I replaced my battery last year all I had to do was reset the clock and windows. Granted mine is a S model so very few electrics on it, but once I reset the clock and windows there car was fine. Black MY2013 SD4 GS Auto, Wood Company Armrest, Freel2 sticker.

Thanks for the replies.

I finally got round to changing the battery last weekend. As per the advice on here I just had to reset the window position memory.

The car now starts a lot more easily. The battery I replaced was the original and therefore 8 years old!

Thanks again
Rhys

a friend has a garage workshop near me and replaced the battery in swmbo,s insignia s/tourer last year,he connected a set of long jump leads to the battery connections in the car then the other end onto the new battery outside the car, undid earth/poss on batt in car, lifted out old batt, then lifted in the new batt(still connected to car)fitted the connectors to the batt posts, undid the jump lead cables and all was well, nothing to reset as car was connected to a batt supply all the time.
