They haven't but if you know how a Defender is easy to steal.

Brother in Law has lost two defenders off the drive in the last few years, as Richard says they are so easy and so desirable.
The article cites models other than Freelander but some poor soul will be the first.

The evoques and discos have some interesting ways to steal them, easiest is likely a signal code copier for when the vehicle is locked, to allow access and then a OBD override from there, or obviously using the RFID keyless to override.

Freelander doesn't have keyless does it? The new ones? Not rich enough to know myself but the architecture of these systems are fairly straightforward from a software point of view. They need to start to upgrade the verification methods and encryption keys. This will only work in the short term as it's basically a tech drug war there, with increasing sophistication. Physical security is always helpful, such as hiding it from view...

Signal code copiers haven't worked for years, the keys use a "rolling codes" list so that after each locking the car is expecting a different code in the list next time.

Our family's Evoque & Freelander have the same keyless remote. The only difference, my MY13 Freelander remote does not have Range Rover embossed into the chrome section of the remote which looks quite nice, but has a simple LR logo stamped on the black body of the remote, just to make it plainly clear that I am a second class LR owner! Procrastination, mankind's greatest labour saving device!

VIA the OBD Port they get direct access to the Keyless Vehicle Module, but untill that route is blocked off you've little chance of stopping them. p****d off with a Digital Keyboard Warrior

A rolling code is overcome by determining the root algorithm. Multiple data sets allow verification. I am not suggesting I know how to do this exactly, as my knowledge is limited to fairly easy to middling encryption methods, but the fact that thefts are so common demonstrates a need to increase system security.

The onus unfortunately isn't on the manufacturer, as they don't cover the cost of the losses, and so to drive the increase in security becomes difficult. We bear the cost of insurance, not the manufacturer. You only have to look at currency security and cashpoint secuirty, to understand the drive for proper authentication and verification to prevent theft. The banks self insure the loss due to fraudulent cashpoint use, and so the security has to improve.

I don't think LR are any worse than other manufacturer, but it is certainly something they could be leading the field on, especially with the premium range of vehicles that they produce. Regardless of encryption you'll still be able to steal a defender by a coat hook through the panel gaps

You comment about the Defender panel gaps reminds me of the 1970's quote that there are only two features on Earth visible from an orbiting space capsule. The Great Wall of China and the panel gaps on a British Leyland car.

I really would like to know the method, just out of interest, but by the time that becomes public we'll be on to much more secure systems. And they'll be getting stolen too.

The problem with security of any design is that the target needs to secure all possible avenues of attack, while the attacker only has to exploit one. Security is all about making the returns not worth the effort of achieving the objective, so multiple layers of moderate security is most effective. Such as hiding the car, in a garage, with alarms, and the vehicle immobilised, and another car in front of the garage door. And hopefully your neighbour with the slightly nicer car hasn't taken any of these precautions

I wish you guys would make your mind up, one minute the Freelander 2 is Land Rover's most reliable vehicle EVER!!
and the next even the car jackers wont nick it as they cant get it to start/stop/move.
