From early test drives of the Jag XE, the 2.0D ain't that great. My personal opinion is that there's too much hype over these new engines, let the Evoque get all the teething troubles.

Nick I'm with Mav, once the full range is out I think there will be more Fl2 owners who will make the move to the DS. Granted it ain't for everyone.

I agree there is a lot of hype, but the press XE's so far haven't had the final production engine software. Freelander 2 HSE Lux 2013MY - Barolo Black with Ivory Leather. Alpine DVD - Privacy -Evoque 20" Dynamic Wheels and more to come.........

I like the exisiting 2.2 diesel -perfect for me! I don't mind the gruff noise - suits the vehicle. Its not the engine's fault that the low end grunt is a bit lacking for off road- that's down to the gearbox. What would have made the Freely2 spectacular however would have been if they could have dropped the 2.7 L diesel in there, providing of course that they could have upgraded the transmission to cope with the extra torque. I think LR development work on the engine over its' lifetime was wrong-headed -that fiddling about with software to up the hp was I think a mistake. Confused the issue - same torque but more horsepower but worse economy - how sensible was that? More importantly given the many reports of Haldex and diff failures on more recent Freelies after they started mucking about with the software - I got to ask if sufficient attention was paid to the ability of the Haldex etc to cope with the increased power?
What is unacceptable to me about the 2.2 engine was its thirst when matched with the auto transmission - a difference of about 5mpg is far too much.
As for the Ingenium, I think it is very risky for JLR to have gone it alone on an engine - particularly if it is to span Jags and Landies. If that new engine turns out to have serious flaws , which may only appear after a few years then that could bankrupt the company! It would have been wiser I think to have collaborated with other manufacturers and then modified the common powerplant to suit off roading - or higher performance for the Jag platforms. It would be nice to think that JLR have managed to turn out a wonderful new engine - but remember that the wonderful RB 211 aero engine bankrupted Rolls Royce.

A TDV6 Freelander 2 was built, but in a transverse engine layout, the front cylinder head was too close to the bodywork to meet pedestrian safety laws, so the project was cancelled.

The new engine has been several years in the making. I don't think they would go to these extreme efforts only to fail.

Yes, the petrol is definitely making a come back, Fords fantastic ecoboost is a great example of what can be done now.

Ford's 2.0 Ecoboost engine is only good because Ford have adopted the LR spec for the engine. When JLR first started durability tests with the Ford engine when the Evoque was being developed, JLR kept blowing head gaskets and had pistons issues to deal with. Ford dismissed this at first until presented with the engines short falls.

JLR built in their own spec to pass durability for their own application, to which Ford then adopted. Notice how the 237bhp Fords came out about the same time as the Evoque petrol? It isn't a coincidence!

JLR did the same with the 2.2 diesel to which Ford adopted. Freelander 2 HSE Lux 2013MY - Barolo Black with Ivory Leather. Alpine DVD - Privacy -Evoque 20" Dynamic Wheels and more to come.........

The Si4 is nice, love it! Mine is still a bit young to get meaningful figures, still less than 2k, & with the hilly terrain, plus stop start traffic, actually mostly stop! I think 14.9L/100km (19 mpg) is not too bad with the AC on all the time.

The Si4 Freelander is one of the nicest Freelanders I have driven. It is brilliant, and in my opinion, JLR missed a trick by not offering it here. Freelander 2 HSE Lux 2013MY - Barolo Black with Ivory Leather. Alpine DVD - Privacy -Evoque 20" Dynamic Wheels and more to come.........

A bit off topic perhaps but my wife is currently looking at buying a Ford Fiesta with the eco boost engine. Do you have any info or views on its reliability etc?

It is a great little engine with a big punch. Go for the 125hp version as this gives a better all round performance but still road tax free. Don't expect anywhere near the advertised mpg, if you are sensible you can get around the 50mpg, obviously more on a long run. Haven't read of many problems at all to do with engine reliability and it has won a few awards.

Supposed to be very good, but you start to hear of complaints when it is fitted in bigger cars like the Focus and new Mondeo.

Vauxhall have just launched their turbo 1.0 which is supposed to be as good as the Ford unit. Freelander 2 HSE Lux 2013MY - Barolo Black with Ivory Leather. Alpine DVD - Privacy -Evoque 20" Dynamic Wheels and more to come.........

I'll let you know on Sunday, when Mrs. Badger has collected her new 2015 Corsa Very Happy its replacing a TwinAir Fiat 500, so am used to lots of low down torque with that unit, and being part of the GM Stable, it's probably just a variation on the existing Fiat unit. Foraging near Gaydon....

Although the new Corsa looks similar to the old one, it is pretty much all new! They drive really really well.

Not sure about it being from the same group of engines as the Fiat engines though. Although the older 2.0 CDTi and 1.4 Turbo patrols are part of the joint engine programme.

Vauxhall/Opel are starting to go back to building all there there own engines before the 1.9 diesel programme 10 years ago.

The new 170ps Diesel engine is Vauxhall's own and something tells me the 1.0 3 cylinder is as well. Freelander 2 HSE Lux 2013MY - Barolo Black with Ivory Leather. Alpine DVD - Privacy -Evoque 20" Dynamic Wheels and more to come.........

Whilst in the dealer test driving disco sport was told the new engine it will be getting is a 2.0 ltr with power down in the 110 range and 2wd to keep the fleet user happy for tax. Sad can't see many being chuffed with that

A 1.0 litre Ecoboost is ok in a 1.2 tonne car, but in a 1.8 tonne car I doubt it will happen. Procrastination, mankind's greatest labour saving device!

Car companies would not be able to pay people to take a 1.8 tonne 1.0 litre car in Australia.

We also have a different registration system. Actually it's different throughout Australia.

NSW, initial purchase, GST (VAT) plus NSW tax plus Registration: $7300 (」3650) for my Si4.

Then registration each year in NSW is based on weight, 1505 - 2504 kg car: $495.00 (」247.50)

If LR can reduce the weight of the car: for NSW 1155 -1504 kg: $346 (」173)

Victoria has a flat registration $706 (」353)

Queenland:
$269.05 3 cylinders
$328.90 4 cylinders
$492.30 5 & 6 cylinders
$669.80 8 cylinders,
$777.10 10 & 12 cylinders.

P.S. My last car was under 975 kg (Seat Ibiza tare weight 873 kg): $262 (」131) registration. Sad to see it go, but I really do like the Freelander & it was worth every cent. Personally I preferred the Freelander over the DS, even based on the limited information at the time, & grabbed one of the last ones I liked in Australia.

If only the Freelander had the new 2.3 litre Ecoboost 200 kW engine! Maybe LR have the guts to put it in the DS to compete with similar cars. Procrastination, mankind's greatest labour saving device!
