I noticed today that my Facebook feed included the LR announcement that the award winning Ewoke will be next getting the new Ingenium diesel engines, a range that many of us are interested in.

Totally with you CG, from what I see at various car manufacturers, they are gearing up ready for when the diesel bubble will burst, and it will come sooner than you think. Compression petrol engines that work the same way as diesel are in advanced stages of development and are more efficient and economical than diesel. I would say they are less than 10 years away. You will see twin turbo 4 cylinder petrol engines doing more than 50/60mpg becoming common place. Freelander 2 HSE Lux 2013MY - Barolo Black with Ivory Leather. You refer to "compression Petrol Engine" is that the same as a direct injection petrol engine which is available on things like a Porsche now? (compression ratio 12.5+ to 1) |

Thx for your interesting perspectives and info Mav71. Not sure why you're so sure most FL2 drivers will migrate to DS, unless there will be future models that address the key areas of concern/disappointment.

From early test drives of the Jag XE, the 2.0D ain't that great. My personal opinion is that there's too much hype over these new engines, let the Evoque get all the teething troubles.

I like the exisiting 2.2 diesel -perfect for me! I don't mind the gruff noise - suits the vehicle. Its not the engine's fault that the low end grunt is a bit lacking for off road- that's down to the gearbox. What would have made the Freely2 spectacular however would have been if they could have dropped the 2.7 L diesel in there, providing of course that they could have upgraded the transmission to cope with the extra torque. I think LR development work on the engine over its' lifetime was wrong-headed -that fiddling about with software to up the hp was I think a mistake. Confused the issue - same torque but more horsepower but worse economy - how sensible was that? More importantly given the many reports of Haldex and diff failures on more recent Freelies after they started mucking about with the software - I got to ask if sufficient attention was paid to the ability of the Haldex etc to cope with the increased power?

I think it was a correct decision to go down the route of a new engine as it can be tailored to the vehicles the company produce, to be the junior partner in a multi company engine can be just as risky, if it is good it can be offered to other manufacturers, thus making JLR a much bigger player. The present offerings from other manufacturers do tend to have lowish torque figures and I can't believe JLR will stupid enough to produce an engine without good torque figures below 2000rpm.

"No I won't buy a DS but I will buy a mini Disco with a decent tailgate entrance and height, at least 900mm from deck to headlining and a full size spare."

The Si4 is nice, love it! Mine is still a bit young to get meaningful figures, still less than 2k, & with the hilly terrain, plus stop start traffic, actually mostly stop! I think 14.9L/100km (19 mpg) is not too bad with the AC on all the time. Procrastination, mankind's greatest labour saving device!

No I mean compression engine, just like a diesel. Direct injection has been around for nearly 20 years now. Freelander 2 HSE Lux 2013MY - Barolo Black with Ivory Leather. Alpine DVD - Privacy -Evoque 20" Dynamic Wheels and more to come......... |

Based purely on history, you always get many people slating the new car when they drive the old car, only to buy the new car later on. Happens with all manufacturers.
