That's the first I have heard that the diff is a problem? Surely these cars are designed to tow (horse boxes trailers etc) and are recognised as one of the best small 4x4 tow cars. Reversing you have to be careful in any car (including the S Max) as slipping clutch with get it hot. Thanks Mark |

Agree chrome was a bad move from the "crayon pushers" but at least only followers see in - unless you do the world a favour and tow a c-van . However been towing 1300kg quite a distance - inc south of france with 11facelift manual (only S spec ) with no problems. And plenty of reversing - our drive needs a lot of manoevering. It was better in TD5 Disco2, with low range, but I had to compromise somewhere. FL2 11 S Black 😂 Gone Disco2 TD5 GS |

The post face lift is supposedly better fuel consumption and the annual tax is lower due to less emissions. There has been clutch problems admittedly and the reverse gear of the manual is high which is why there may be a preference for the auto for caravanner's, especially the SD4. My opinion and you are welcome to trash it |

We have a 60 reg pre and 11 reg post facelift FL2 in the family and they drive very differently. Both have had tow bars removed as we don't need them. The later one with lower emissions seems to have more torque and power than the earlier model and mpg is slightly better but not a lot in it. The 60 reg 49k miles has just had the rear diff bearing and haldex replaced and the 11 reg one had a gearbox rebuild at about 40k. Note that some of the 11 reg (including ours) have suffered from the hesitation problem which LR seem unable to fix on early facelifts. |

I know I say it on every thread that talks about someone wanting to tow something......... but why don't you just buy a disco 4, your nearly there at the money your talking about

My first impression was that the FL didn't have the low down pull of our S Max (I know different car etc). I need a second test drive to confirm. I have driven later FL's but not side by side so cannot make an objective comparison between the two, but your observations are interesting. |

I would love a Disco but it is more expensive to run and will not fit in our garage. It has proven difficult to find the spec I want on a later model for the money. Especially when I may have to factor in fitting a towball and roof rails. The pre facelift one I have a deposit on is spec'd perfectly, its just that it has slightly higher running costs. |

Im not wrong in saying that the diff can be dodgy and it certainly isnt the tow proof diff, that people often assume they are getting when they buy a 4x4

I am only on 51k on a 10 plate, but I tow a 1500kg van and have done many miles with it on the back and no probs. Still on original clutch but for me, the biggest difference in ride, handling, comfort and MPG is tyres.

I have a 2010 pre face lift XS auto with roof rails and tow bar - sadly no leather seat upgrade though! I tow a 1350kg van.
