@ Pab
While I accept what the figures on the reliability index seem to suggest. Any search of Honest John or Parkers will show that unfortunately A Santa fe or virtually any far eastern car will have far less issues than a Freelander. Just look at the number of threads on here about throttle bodies, Diffs, Wheel bearings etc.
We have two FL2's in the family both have had problems that I would consider unacceptable in a newish well maintained car, yes all vehicles have some issues but the FL2 has been downgraded on many websites because of reliability which all us Landrover fans desperatly hoped Landrover had addressed. I am just disapointed that by buying a vehicle I desire I am buying a heap of trouble.

I would seriously advise not paying any attention to anything 'Honest John' has to say! At least the reliability index figures are based on fact.

The SF has it's own little foibles, steering wheel de-laminating, corroding road wheels, rear doors not unlocking, clutch problems on manuals, cruise control not reactivating after a gear change, crank sensor problems and a few others. They are now beginning to show up as the warranty runs out, rear self levelling shockers seems to be the latest low mileage failure and at 」500 each and a bit plus fitting, a lot of unhappy bunnies about. You have to remember the SF are considerably less cars than the FL sold, probably less than a quarter, could be as much as one SF to ten Fls. The latest model is restricted to about 1500 cars to the UK to increase residuals, not exactly apples and apples. my PC is slightly to the right of Genghis
2012 HSE SD4 In Orkney Grey now gone, best car ever.

Scotland 2013 Freelander 2 SD4 GS Auto Fuji White

Have had 4 Freelander 2, all GS Auto, current and previous SD.
2008: no problems at all, ceramic heater recall.
2010: rejected with vibration after 9 months.
2011 face lift replacement for above brilliant car until fuel tank sensor replacement the dealer repairs damaged rear diff, prop shaft, heat shields and oxygen sensor.
Spat the dummy, used our car for a while, tried a Rav4 auto. No No. OK but not in FL class.

Bought an ex demo GS SD and love it. I have always enjoyed the FL driving experience no other makes of this class come close.
Yes some have better bits and lots of not so good bits as well. I tried most of the opposition very thoroughly ,all auto, gave up and bought FL2. No regrets.
New service manager at dealers introduced himself and assured me many many changes during my time away from LR. He had been told of history. All FL2's (3) Gone
2011 Mercedes C180 CGI Gone
FL2 GS Auto SD with heated leather, factory tints, alloy spare and a few other bits.

well, I am very happy to say that in two weeks time, my Freelander HSE goes in to be replaced with a Disco Sport HSE Lux, same engine (Yay!) but a better driving experience, quieter, and less roll.
The Freelander was good, I have had one of the first Mk1s, a coupe, of Freelnder 2 and each was an improvement on the one it replaced, and the Disco sport is exactly that, an improvement.
Why on earth look at anything else?

I have just been under my son's FL2 with a hosepipe washing off the mud, dirt and grass hanging underneath (he travels on farm tracks a lot) and I was wondering if anyone had any info on how well protected the new DS was "down below" ? One thing that sets the FL2 apart from most soft roaders is the degree of designed in underbody protection.

Designed in under body protection, it's pants, the fuel tank is more exposed than anything I can think off and actually hangs down with stupid brackets that catch.

Not changing cars yet, but for the future I'll certainly keep an eye on the Mitsubishi Outlander hybrid. I could run it for peanuts on local trips (or even for free - I have solar panels) but unlike most electrics it will also do long trips. I don't imagine it will match the FR2 offroad, but as I get older I don't go to really muddy places that often.
LR have a hybrid mockup at Gaydon, but so far they don't seem to be going down that road. Ex AA Series III LWB Safari - Gone
300TDi Disco (bought new - terrible car) sent back after 18 months
Freelander 1 Estate - leased, given back at end of lease
200TDi Disco (bought from a mate with 100,000 on the clock) - Gone
Disco 2 TD5 - sold and exported to France
FR2 TD4 GS - Gone
FR2 SD4 HSE - Now changed for a DS
New model ex-demo Evoque S 180 in white
Unable to order a new DS, so gave up. Now have a Volvo S90 Recharge.

Any type of battery vehicle is just a stopgap measure. The saving on mpg is probably more than beaten by the energy cost of making the batteries In the first place.

The future is hydrogen fuel cell powering electric motors
