Agreed they are normally gate valves, Bill. They are still there to isolate and, unfortunately, they can still leak! Screwfix also offer ball type valves although they can leak and seize too.

Surestop fitting

Following Taz's suggestion of a 'Surestop' remote valve switch, I bought one for approx. half the street price on ebay and fitted it today.

Because the stopcock is fitted against the wall underneath a cupboard in the utility, it is awkward to keep using. Now the Surestop is fitted we can switch off the water whenever we wish.

Unfortunately I couldn't fit it straight after the stopcock due to the shortness of the pipe, so it does branch before the Surestop, but only to the kitchen sink and outside tap. In some ways this is useful as we can switch off the water to the majority of the house when we are away but a neighbour can still water the plants in the summer.
