This has been mentioned before, I don't remember the name of the topic. My car certainly makes this high pitch sound for several minutes after the engine has been turned off. |

It could be the lubing system for the turbo as it cools down after heavy/hard driving. If you immediately stop a Turbo engine after stopping driving the turbo bearings are still red hot and the residual heat can fry the oil onto the bearings so in some systems there is a pump that will circulate cooling oil round the turbo bearings for a while after shutting down. It is good practice if you have a turbo diesel to always leave the engine to idle for 20-30 secs after a hard drive to assist with turbo cooling and give longer turbo life. There other thing that it could be is the high pressure fuel pump for the HDi system. How can carbon have a footprint, it has no feet?

Thanks for the info Tim but a gentle commute to Ampthill (13 miles) does not constitute a hard drive. This sound I also get is a high pitched 'whistle' or 'whine', which sounds more electronic than mechanical. This sound has also come from the five loan cars I have had whilst mine has been in for repair, so I presume it is something that should be there, even if we don't know why it is there?? |

Not sure with the FL2 cause I dont have mine yet until mid July but you can alter whine somewhat with the Blow Off Valve. Although I'm sure if its the same with the Diesel. With the BOV you can adjust the pressure somewhat which can reduce the pressure and hence the whine........At least with my car at least...... Trust No-one but Yourself |

Dutchie, I think I am right in saying this 'whine/ whistle' is not during driving. It is when you turn off the engine, lock the car up and walk away....you can hear a high pitched almost electronic whistle which after a while, then stops. I would be surprised if this was the turbo??? |

I'd agree that it is more of an 'electronic' sounding noise. I've lifted the bonnet several time to listen, but I'm still no wiser .... |

The sound can't be heard inside the car, so I think it's definately coming from the engine bay. It happens if I just switch the engine on and off without going anywhere. |
