I have just had a Thule detachable tow bar fitted to my Freelander 2 2011, but I forgot to say to the Landrover dealer who fitted it that I had an Alko Stabaliser fitted to my caravan.

The reason I am concerned is that when I bought my caravan, the caravan dealer said that I had the wrong size towball for the Alko Stabaliser and changed it for me.

I cannot remember whether it was a larger or smaller size required.

Does anybody know if this could be a problem or not and what size it should be.

The 'ball' size is the same but the neck/ball is slightly extended to allow full and correct articulation of the ALKO hitch, otherwise there is a chance of it becoming detached.

I have now spoken to the dealership who fitted the towbar, they say that there should not be a problem as they fit these to all Discovery models and new Evoke models.

Just to be on the safe side I have sent an e-mail to Thule to ask there advice.

Mines got the witter detachable towbar and my caravan has an alko stabilizer fitted, both work well together and I haven't had any issues.

Mine is a Witter detachable Alan, it doesn't matter if its detachable, swan neck or fixed. The picture illustrates the extra metal taken off/extended only to allow correct movement of the hitch. It seems common practice now for all towballs to be ALKO compatible when fitted

Thanks for your inputs, I just read the words that it may become detached and thought whoa stop the bus I better check this out before I use it to tow.

Also of vital importance is that the ball to be used with the Al-Ko hitch must be "dry, clean and unpainted" as opposed to "well greased" for all (?) other hitches. I have a ladder type adjustable hitch and two different type balls on carriers to allow for this. Everyone can spread it - Anyone can catch it. Stay home - the life you save can be your own!

If its the flange type of tow ball as shown by Eyorkshire then the correct ball/neck is important with the Alko hitch
if its the normal type of detachable tow bar then clearance will not be a problem.All balls are 50mm as standard.Had witter and thule on various cars and never had a problem

The tow balls shown at the top of this thread are "flange fitting" tow balls. What has not been mentioned is the "swan neck" type. All of which are compatible with Alko stabilisers. Most detachable bars are swan neck type and almost all continental made bars are swan neck.
