Jeep overturns on ice

I just wonder if the driver thought that 4WD made them invincible and didn't drive to the conditions. Might not be the case but it wouldn't be the first time.

My neighbour has one of those jeeps and he put himself in a ditch in the ice a while back, drive to conditions is spot on. There's a car with winter tyres on its side in a field ditch near me, these 4x4s and winter accessories are very helpful but common sense goes out the window when some people use them.

Knew someone who did that to a Jeep in the summer, perhaps it's a car driver combination that causes it. Laughing Though he was probably on the phone as was his habit. my PC is slightly to the right of Genghis

I think once you hit ice you are nothing more than a passenger and a tall 4x4 isn't going to necessarily be the best thing to be in.

Ive had the pleasure of sitting in a defender that was on its side Embarassed

I was only 16 and was giving some mates a lift home from a party, had to run home and fetch a tractor to flip it back up At work

I don't believe that story. They didn't have Defenders when you were 16!!

Just read the lined report and they claim it is a write-off. Just proves one should not believe what one sees on the BBC! Everyone can spread it - Anyone can catch it. Stay home - the life you save can be your own!

It didn't flip due to icey conditions, it flipped because of the incompetent chimp that was behind the wheel, thinking "I have a 4WD I'm invincible and all common sense doesn't apply" 21MY Defender 90 S 3.0 D200

You can slide sideways backwards, in fact any ways you like for as long as you like providing the bottom of the wheels don't hit an immovable object whilst travelling sideways a a high enough speed. some do some don't, some may have been travelling at a slow enough speed at the top of the hill but unfortunately when arriving in a slide at the bottom weren't. Sometimes just luck, sometimes inexperience, others just stupid, after it's happened and the picky taken who knows what happened. Just unable to sit on its little tootsies Laughing my PC is slightly to the right of Genghis

Best 4x4 lesson I learned was my first 4 wheeler a long time ago - 2nd hand series 1 Disco - got it on a day we had lots of snow and had to go over some country lanes to pick up my daughter. Was great - we went up steep hills etc no problem and when I then had to do a 90 degree turn on to another road I was so carried away with the straight ahead traction that common sense went out the window - turned steering wheel and went straight on sideways Thankfully no damage done but a valuable lesson learned - 4wd is not going to stop 2/3 tons of metal on snow going where Mr Newtons law of physics says it's going to go !!!
Shudder at times when get passed by other 4x4's on icy snowy dual carriageways when they're doing 50 / 60 with a roundabout looming up in front of them ! Freelander 2

We left our daughters early after Xmas to come back home, on a 'B' road it refused to go around a left hand bend and started sliding into the other side of the road and towards the hedge.
Black ice was the bum clenching cause but luckily the tyres found some tarmac and when they did the jolt wanted to lift the car sideways, its at times like this that leather seats are better than cloth for removing stains Embarassed
A little further on and there was a queue of very slow moving traffic probably caught unawares as well, and my car fared no better than theirs in that situation.

Agree, because of the higher centre of gravity they can go over easier than a conventional car.

Have a look at this vid of a Disco going over after what looks like a relatively minor shunt at a slow speed.
(However I reckon it was the Disco drivers natural instinct of trying to take evasive action that conributed to it's rolling.)

Drive to conditions is indeed key.

In the floods round here, it's amazing to see all the owners of 4x4's that seem to think their 4x4 is automatically amphibious.....

Not just amphibious, but invincible too! Idiots in 4x4's all rushing out at the first sign of snow/floods to show off.

Looks like the low pointed nose designed to throw pedestrians over the roof has a lot to answer for there. Instinct must now be modified to turn towards the agressor. Everyone can spread it - Anyone can catch it. Stay home - the life you save can be your own!
